 </a> (PDF)ASHEVILLE, NC – For the second year in a row the Explore Asheville SoCon Wrestling Championship came down to the final bout. For the second year in a row, App State heavyweight Stephan Monchery came through in the clutch to deliver a team title. Monchery left no doubt on Saturday, rolling to an 11-1 major decision over Chattanooga’s Ethan Vergara to give the Mountaineers their fourth SoCon tournament title in a row – by a narrow 1.5 points over the Mocs (94.5-93.0). After Chattanooga freshman Kade Rule used three-straight takedowns to power a 13-3 major decision at 197 pounds, the Mocs held the lead going into the final weight class. Monchery stepped up, recording a takedown just 13 seconds into his match, and putting the match out of reach with an escape and takedown just seconds into the third period. He pushed the lead to 10-1 with 51 seconds left before adding a point with riding time for the final score. The finals were highlighted by tremendous parity early on, as six different schools won titles over the first six weight classes – a streak punctuated by VMI senior Ryan Vigil’s 7-2 win at 165 pounds. Vigil entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed but knocked off defending champion Thomas Snipes in a 5-2 sudden victory on Friday morning and followed with a 5-4 win over No. 4 seed Bryce Griffin that afternoon. His efforts earned Vigil the 2026 SoCon Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. Bellarmine made an impression in the team race, picking up a pair of individual titles, two second-place medals, and three third-place medals to finish a close third with 88.5 points. Knights head coach Ned Shuck was named SoCon Coach of the Year as a result. The Citadel (53.5 points) finished in fourth after placing three wrestlers in the finals, followed by Davidson (42.5 points), Gardner-Webb (39.5 points), and VMI (36.0 points). Campbell (19 points) and Presbyterian (18.5 points) rounded out the field, with Blue Hose 184-pounder Reed Douglas earning a silver medal in a strong effort. Davidson’s Anderson Heap earned an 8-5 sudden victory over Carson DesRosiers in an exciting 149-pound final, becoming the first Wildcat to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships since 2015. Gardner-Webb’s T.K. Davis, the SoCon Wrestler of the Year after a 21-1 regular season, picked up a 12-4 major decision for his second 133-pound title in as many years. In addition to Vigil’s upset at 165 pounds, App State’s Aldo Hernandez was victorious at 141 pounds as the No. 5 seed, and Bellarmine’s Jeb Prechtel won as the No. 6 seed at 157 pounds. The tight team race and parity on Saturday shouldn’t be surprising following a regular season that saw a three-way tie for first and a three-way tie for fourth in final standings. Chattanooga, with seven freshmen and sophomores in its starting lineup, won a pair of SoCon titles Saturday and had five more podium finishes. <div class="payload-richtext">ASHEVILLE, NC – Defending champion App State posted three consecutive wins to close Friday’s semifinals and surged ahead of Chattanooga and Bellarmine to lead a tight team race at the 2026 Explore Asheville SoCon Wrestling Championships. Stephan Monchery’s major decision gave the Mountaineers the lead heading into Saturday’s final day, following Logan Eller’s win at 197 and Tomas Brooker’s win at 184. Saturday’s action begins at 10:00 am inside Kimmel Arena, beginning with the Consolation Semifinals. The Consolation Finals are set for 1:00 pm, followed by the Finals at 3:00 pm.  </a>. The Mountaineers, winners of three SoCon tournament titles in a row, finished with 69.5 points Friday, followed closely by Chattanooga (63) and Bellarmine (62.5), with the Knights posting their most impressive effort since joining the SoCon ranks. Eight of the conference’s nine teams had a wrestler advance to the Finals. App State led the way with five, followed by Bellarmine (4), Chattanooga (4), and The Citadel (3). Davidson, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, and VMI each had one wrestler advance. Seven top seeds will wrestle for an automatic berth to the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships, and Saturday will feature three matchups between the top two seeds – T.K. Davis was named SoCon Wrestler of the Year and Chattanooga’s Kade Rule was named SoCon Freshman of the Year Thursday as the conference announced its 2026 postseason awards. The Coach of the Year and Most Outstanding Wrestler will be announced at the conclusion of the 2026 Explore Asheville SoCon Wrestling Championships, which begin Friday (March 6) and conclude Saturday (March 7) at Kimmell Arena in Asheville, NC.  </a>.  The head coaches from each of the nine teams in the SoCon voted on the awards and were not allowed to vote for members of their own team. A 10-man All-Conference team and All-Freshman team were also selected. Davis (Rockmart, Ga. / Rockmart HS) is the first SoCon Wrestler of the Year in Gardner-Webb history. The redshirt sophomore earned the top seed at 133 pounds in this week’s Explore Asheville SoCon Wrestling Championships, going 8-0 in conference duals and 21-1 overall to build on last season’s SoCon Freshman of the Year accolade. He is ranked No. 18 in the most recent NCAA Coaches Ranking and is among the national leaders with 10 tech falls. Rule (Mineral Point, WI / Mineral Point HS) was sharp this season for the Co-Champion Mocs, posting an 8-0 mark in SoCon duals and a 15-5 overall record. He recorded seven major decision and pinned five opponents. Chattanooga led the way with four All-SoCon selections, followed by Co-Champions App State (2) and The Citadel (2). Davidson and Gardner-Webb each had one. <div class="payload-richtext">SPARTANBURG, SC – Davidson sophomore Anderson Heap was named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for matches held between February 11-February 17. Heap (St. Cloud, FL / Osceola HS) picked up a pair of ranked wins last week, moving his SoCon mark to 7-0 with wins over No. 30 Kaden Keiser (App State) and No. 31 Carson DesRosier (The Citadel). He won each bout in dramatic fashion, handing Keiser his first SoCon loss with a 4-1 (SV-1) decision. <div class="payload-richtext">SPARTANBURG, SC – Chattanooga senior Mason Reiniche was named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for matches held between February 4-February 10. Reiniche (Soddy-Daisy, TN / The Baylor School) was sharp in three dominant wins for the Mocs last week, scoring 17 of a possible 18 points in wins over Ryan Vigil (VMI), Talon Maple (Campbell), and Brandon Jacoby (Presbyterian). His fall vs. Maple came in only 48 seconds, which is the quickest of his career. He allowed only two escapes in the three wins and forged a 25-2 edge in less than 13 minutes (12:58) of mat time. He powered Chattanooga to three shutout wins as a team and a 145-0 combined score for the week. The 52-0 win over Presbyterian in Buies Creek matched the program’s highest point total in a SoCon dual in history. Chattanooga (8-5, 5-1 SoCon) hosts App State (8-5, 5-0 SoCon) in a key dual on February 15. That match begins at 2:00 pm in Maclellan Gym (ESPN+). <div class="payload-richtext">SPARTANBURG, SC – The Citadel redshirt junior Carson DesRosier was named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for matches held between January 28-February 3. DesRosier (Helena, MT / Capital HS) proved to be the deciding point in a 19-18 team win over preseason SoCon favorite Chattanooga on January 31, pinning the Mocs’ Yuta Otera in 4:38 to open the dual. After the Mocs tied the team score with a major decision in the final bout, DesRosier’s fall became the tiebreaker (Criterion 3.21.B). The win improved DesRosier’s season record to 11-6 (3-0 SoCon) and marked the 47th win of his career. Flynn went 5-1 at the event, including three wins over wrestlers ranked in the top 33 nationally. His lone loss came by an 8-3 decision to third-ranked Eddie Ventresca (Virginia Tech), who went on to win the bracket at 125 pounds.  Flynn scored a team-high 10 points at the Scuffle, powering Chattanooga to a ninth-place finish in the team standings. <div class="payload-richtext">SPARTANBURG, SC – App State redshirt junior Kaden Keiser was named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for competition held between December 3-December 9. Keiser (Winner, SD / Winner HS) won twice at the 2025 Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, bouncing back from a loss to No. 14 Aden Valencia of Stanford to post a 14-6 major decision over No. 33 Paul Kelly of Cal Baptist. Keiser followed with an 8-6 win over Edinboro’s Ryan Michaels to stay alive in the consolation bracket. He fell to No. 24 Alek Martin if South Dakota State to wrap up his time in Vegas. Redding is a two-time NCAA qualifier who was ranked inside the top 20 by some outlets this season. Little recovered from a Redding takedown with his own in the first period and rode out the second period with a 4-4 tie. Little took a 5-4 lead on an escape in the third and pulled off the winning takedown with only 22 seconds on the clock.  Little improve to 10-6 on the season and is ranked No. 30 nationally in his weight class by FloWrestling. For the first time in the Hall of Fame's existence, teams were eligible for nomination, and the iconic 2007 Appalachian State Football team was the top vote-getter. BUSINESS LEADER FORUMThe 2026 SoCon Business Leader Forum, presented by Explore Asheville, is set for Friday, March 6, at 3:00 pm at Battery Park Hall. <div class="payload-richtext">SPARTANBURG, SC – VMI junior Patrick Jordon was named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for competition held between November 5-12. Jordon (Providence Forge, VA / New Kent HS) wrestled well for the Keydets in two duals last week, recording a quick fall in a win over Emory & Henry’s Luke Osborne in 98 seconds for his second victory of the season. That win helped VMI to a sweep over the Wasps in Friday night’s home opener. Jordon held his own on Sunday in Ann Arbor, MI, battling with Wolverines All-America and third-ranked Lachlan McNeil before falling in a 7-2 decision. VMI (1-1) will be back in action on November 16, traveling to face Edinboro at Noon in the Keystone State. The Keydets’ next home duals come on November 22 against Mercyhurst (11:00 am) and Duke (3:00 pm). <div class="payload-richtext">SPARTANBURG, SC – The Citadel redshirt junior Thomas Snipes was named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week following the 2025-26 season’s first official competition. Snipes (Simpsonville, SC / Hillcrest HS) captured first place at 165 pounds at the one-day Southeast Open hosted by Virginia Tech in Salem, VA, on Sunday with a 4-0 record. Snipes picked up a major decision to start the day and defeated Davidson senior Tanner Peake – ranked No. 24 nationally by WrestleStat and No. 27 by Intermat – in the semifinals to set up a rematch from the 2025 NCAA Championships with 10th ranked Andrew Sparks of Minnesota. Snipes avenged his loss to Sparks last March in Philadelphia, capturing a 2-1 decision to win the 165-pound title. The win vaulted Sparks to No. 10 (FloWrestling) and No. 18 (Intermat) in this week’s national rankings at 165. Snipes is the defending SoCon Most Outstanding Wrestler, earning that honor after an impressive run to a SoCon title and NCAA automatic bid at 165 pounds last spring at the Explore Asheville 2025 SoCon Wrestling Championships. His efforts led The Citadel to a second-place finish as a team. Snipes went 28-9 last season overall (7-1 SoCon) and won three matches in Asheville.
