ETSU Wins SoCon Women’s Golf Championship

Furman’s Morgan claims second consecutive individual title

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – ETSU shot a 2-over-par 290 in Tuesday’s final round to move 13 strokes in front of Samford and claim the team title at the 2024 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship, which was contested at Moss Creek Golf Club’s par-72, 6,036-yard South course. Furman’s Anna Morgan equaled the fourth-lowest three-round score in tournament history enroute to claiming the individual title after shooting a 2-under 214.

ETSU clinched an automatic berth to the NCAA regionals with its championship win. The NCAA field will be announced live on Wednesday, April 24, at 2 p.m. (ET), on the Golf Channel.

The Bucs led throughout the tournament on the way to claiming their second SoCon title, and their first since 2021. ETSU’s three-round 879 marked the third-best tournament score in the history of the SoCon Championship, while runner-up Samford’s three-day 892 was the 10th-lowest total on record.

Unlike a year ago, when Morgan led the three-day event wire-to-wire, the Spartanburg, South Carolina, native had to overcome a one-shot deficit following Monday’s second round to become Furman’s 19th individual champion. She carded six birdies during the final round, including four on the back nine. ETSU’s Sophie Bert, who was tied for the lead following the second round, fired an even-par 72 on Tuesday and finished two strokes behind Morgan with a 216.  Samford’s Gabi Nicastro matched the second-lowest single-round score in SoCon tournament history with a final-round 4-under 68 to move up seven spots and finished tied for third, alongside ETSU’s Brianna Castaldi after both finished with 2-over 218s. Western
Carolina’s Brielle Mapanao rounded out the top five with a final score of 219.

Samford was third following both the first and second rounds and used a strong final round to overcome Furman’s one-stroke lead and post its highest finish in the history of the tournament. The Paladins, who shot a 15-over 902, finished third, with Mercer claiming fourth place after shooting a 911. Chattanooga finished fifth, just one shot behind the Bears, with Western Carolina and UNCG sharing sixth place, as each team shot a 915. Wofford (934) finished eighth and The Citadel (1,012) rounded out the team standings.

ETSU’s Amber Thornton claimed the SoCon Pinnacle Award, which goes to the student-athlete with the highest GPA on the championship-winning team.
