ETSU leads SoCon Women’s Golf Championship after day one

Two-Time Defending Champion Furman Sits in Second Place – Two Shots Back

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – ETSU leads the 2024 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship by two strokes, while Furman’s Anna Morgan holds the individual lead after the first day of competition at Moss Creek Golf Club’s par-72, 6,036-yard South course.
 
The Bucs, who are ranked No. 124 nationally, the fourth-highest ranking amongst SoCon teams, are 5-over-par 293 after round one. Furman is in second after shooting a 7-over-par 295. The Paladins entered the tournament as the highest ranked team in the conference (62nd) according to the Clipppd rankings.
 
Morgan, the defending individual champion, carded a 2-under 70 in round one to hold a two-stroke lead over four golfers who are tied for second place, including teammate Audrey Ryu, Samford’s Bailey Dunstan, Wofford’s Lilli Horn and ETSU’s Grace Chin. ETSU’s Sophie Bert is alone in sixth place after firing an opening round 73 on day one of the championship, with four additional golfers in a logjam for seventh place, just four strokes off the pace.   
 
The Bucs, who are seeking their second championship in four years after claiming the 2021 title, have four players in the top 10. Joining Chin and Bert are Brianna Castaldi (74) and Alex Crafton (74), who are among those tied for seventh.   

The Paladins, who are seeking their third straight SoCon title and eighth in the last nine played, have Caroline Crumrine in a six-way tie for 11th after shooting a 4-over 76 in round one.
 
Led by Dunstan and Gabi Nicastro, who is tied for seventh, Samford is in third place, seven shots back from Furman. Western Carolina is in fourth place after a first-round score of 17-over-par 305, while UNCG is in fifth at 21-over-par 309. Wofford carded a 22-over-par 310 to finish sixth after day one.
 
Chattanooga and Mercer finished the first round in a tie for seventh place, with The Citadel rounding out the field in ninth place after the first round of play.
