Saturday's Women's Basketball Roundup

Mercer 56, Samford 53

Senior Nahawa Diarra notched her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 boards and the Mercer women's basketball team offset a nine-point deficit midway through the second period with 41 percent shooting in the second half to turn back visiting Samford, 56-53, on Saturday afternoon in Hawkins Arena. The result marked the eighth-straight series victory for the Bears (6-10, 1-0 SoCon) who captured their conference opener for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign.

The Samford women's basketball team opened Southern Conference play with a hard-fought 56-53 loss at Mercer Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Arena. With the loss, Samford fell to 5-12 overall and 0-1 in SoCon play. Mercer improved to 6-10 overall and 1-0 in league action. Samford was led in the loss by Claire Johnson with 14 points. Kennedy Langham had 12 points, while Annie Ramil added nine points and nine rebounds.

UNCG 62, Chattanooga 48

The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team never allowed Chattanooga to lead in a 62-48 victory on Saturday afternoon in Fleming Gymnasium. With Saturday's win, UNCG improves to 9-0 at home and 2-0 in The Southern Conference (SoCon). Saturday's win marks the second consecutive year that the Spartans have started out 2-0 in conference play. Jaila Lee and Nya Smith led the game with 13 points apiece. Makiah Asidanya followed closely behind with 10 points.

It was a tale of two halves for the Chattanooga women's basketball team in Greensboro on Saturday, as a slow start from the Mocs proved too much for UTC to come back from as UNCG handed the Mocs their first SoCon loss of the season in a 62-48 result. The Mocs (6-9, 1-1 SoCon) couldn't find the bottom of the net to open the day at Fleming Gymnasium while the Spartans (11-5, 2-0 SoCon) were dominant over the opening 20 minutes of action. Despite trailing 38-13 at halftime, the Mocs were able to mount a comeback in the second half to make it a much more respectable result on the day.
