The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team defeated the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 68-55, in Fleming Gym Saturday in a non-conference contest. Freshman Nya Smith led the game with a career-high 21 points, going 8-for-13 in field goals and 4-for-6 from behind the arc. With 16 points from Jayde Gamble and 11 from Jaila Lee, three Spartans finished in double figures.Western Carolina 80, USC Upstate 52
The Western Carolina women's basketball team triumphed on the road over the USC Upstate Spartans, posting an explosive 80-52 victory over the Spartans. The win moves the Catamounts to 4-1 on the season, their best start through five games since the 2007-08 season. The Purple and Gold were led by Chelsea Wooten, who hit the 20-point milestone against the Spartans for the second-consecutive season. The senior from McKinney, Texas was electric in Spartanburg, going 6/9 from three and going 2/2 from the free-throw line on the day. She was joined in the scoring effort by AC Carter, Tyja Beans, and Zanoria Cruz all had 10+ on the day. Beans finished just one rebound shy of the second double-double of her career. The Wofford women's basketball team gave a hearty comeback push in the second half Saturday night in John M. Belk Arena, but the Davidson Wildcats held firm to close out a 74-63 win. Both teams move to 2-2 with their respective results. Davidson shot hot with a 49.1 percent overall mark and 44.0 percent clip from three. Wofford posted a solid 37.7 percent overall clip, but the Terriers were held to 25.0 percent beyond the arc. Davidson won the glass, 38-27, but the Terriers won the turnover battle, forcing 17 while committing only 10.
