Wofford's Rachael Rose Named to Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award Watch List
Junior guard one of 15 mid-major players represented
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Her Hoop Stats announced today its 15-player midseason watch list for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award with Wofford's Rachael Rose among the honorees. The Becky Hammon Award was first given out in 2020, with South Dakota's Ciara Duffy being named the inaugural winner. FGCU's Kierstan Bell won the award in 2021 and 2022, and Massachusetts' Sam Breen won the most recent award in 2023.
Rose, a junior captain for the Wofford women's basketball squad, has excelled thus far on the court. Averaging 21.2 points per game, Rose leads the SoCon and ranks 15th nationally. She is currently boasting a 50-40-90 campaign, shooting 50.6 percent overall, 41.4 percent from three and 90.1 percent at the stripe. Rose owns 88 assists at a 5.5 per game average, both of which lead the league and rank top 35 in the country. At 8.4 rebounds per game, Rose is second in the SoCon. She is also second defensively with 32 steals at 2.00 per game. Rose is currently the only player in the nation averaging at least 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game.
She has tallied 20 or more points 11 times this season, the most recent being a career-high 33 points at Western Carolina. Rose is currently on a streak of 35 consecutive double-digit scoring games, far and away the Wofford program record. She recorded her 1,000th career point earlier this season against NC Central, and she is knocking on the door of more history at just 35 rebounds away from 500.
A native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, Rose has recorded five double-doubles this season. One of those was a near triple-double where she fell just one assist short in a winning effort at Virginia, a win that she punctuated with her buzzer-beating floater to seal Wofford's historic first win over an ACC team. She has been well decorated by the SoCon this season, earning a record-tying six SoCon Player of the Week honors, two SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week awards and back-to-back SoCon Player of the Month nods.
Rose entered this season as the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year after being named the league's player of the year last season. She is just the second player in program history to earn the distinction, and she is now the first player in program history to be honored on the Becky Hammon Award watch list.
To be eligible for this award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major." The following conferences are considered high-major for the purposes of this award, and thus ineligible: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC. In October, the 25-player preseason watch list was announced. The 10 semifinalists will be announced in February, followed by the five finalists announced in early March. The winner will be announced around the Final Four. The list is fluid and players may play their way on or off the list over the course of the season.
