Samford’s Claire Johnson named SoCon player of the week
Freshman guard averaged 28 points this week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Claire Johnson has been named Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 28 – Feb. 3, after averaging 28 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists as the Bulldogs went 1-1 this week. This award is selected by the league office.
On Thursday Jan. 30, Johnson recorded a career high of 26 points in a 90-86 double overtime win against Western Carolina. The freshman guard made five three-point shots, went 9-for-10 from the free throw line, secured six rebounds and tallied four steals.
Against UNCG on Saturday, Feb. 1, Johnson set another career high with 30 points in a 78-66 loss. The Paducah, Kentucky, native shot 56 percent from the field and went 9-for-11 from the free throw line, while grabbing five rebounds and three steals.
Samford (7-16, 2-5 SoCon) travels hosts Mercer on Saturday, Feb. 8.
