Chattanooga falls to N.C. State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 64-45

Mocs conclude the season at 28-5 overall behind its 17th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance

Raleigh, N.C. – The No. 14-seeded Chattanooga Mocs women's basketball team saw its championship season end with a 64-45 defeat to No. 3 N.C. State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon inside Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.
 
Chattanooga concludes the season at 28-4 overall behind its 17th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance. The 20-plus win season marked the second consecutive for the program and the 22nd in program history.
 
The Mocs took the lead early in the game with Karsen Murphy scoring a three-pointer on the Mocs’ first possession. Chattanooga and N.C. State played back and forth for more than two minutes before the Wolfpack answered with a three at the 7:10 mark. The score was tied at five going into the first media timeout of the game.
 
N.C. State then went on a seven-point run to take the lead and finished the first quarter with a 13-9 advantage.
 
Caia Elisaldez scored her first points of the game to start the second quarter, pulling Chattanooga within two points of the Wolfpack. After a 7-2 point run by N.C. State, the Mocs trailed by seven at the second quarter media timeout.
 
SoCon tournament MOP and First Team selection Jada Guinn scored four more points to send the Mocs into halftime down by a score of 26-17. Chattanooga shot 23 percent from the field during the first half with Jada Guinn leading the Mocs offensively with six points, going two-for-six from the field and making both of her free throw attempts.
 
N.C. State came out of halftime strong, knocking down a three-pointer on its first possession of the half,  but Chattanooga responded as Raven Thompson converted a fouled layup to a three-point possession. The Wolfpack then went on a 12-point run followed by a made jump shot from Hannah Kohn and a layup from Takia Davis. Chattanooga scored nine points to N.C. State’s 19 in the third quarter.
 
Chattanooga was lead in the fourth quarter by Jada Guinn and Raven Thompson who scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. A 9-0 run in the final 2:40 of the game came up short for the Mocs as the Wolfpack won, 64-45. The Mocs shot 33.3 percent from the field and 20 percent from behind the arc in the second half of play.
 
Jada Guinn finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Mocs. The graduate guard scored double digits in 32 of the 33 games this season, 11 of which were 20-point performances, and included five double-double performances. The four-time SoCon Player of the Week lead Chattanooga in scoring all-season, averaging 16 points per game.

Chattanooga’s 28 wins this season is the most since the 2014-15 season. The Mocs got the automatic bid after winning their 20th SoCon tournament title and 23rd regular season title. They joined South Carolina as the only two teams to go undefeated in true road games this season.
