Saturday's Women's Basketball Roundup

Mercer 70, Bethune-Cookman 64

Visiting Mercer shot 48 percent from the field in the second half, and then held off a late charge by Bethune-Cookman with six free throws in the final minute, to pick up its first road win of the season with a 70-64 victory over the Wildcats on Saturday in Moore Gymnasium. The result snapped a two-game skid for the Bears (4-5) who registered a season-best 20 free throws (30 attempts) in the outing as well. It was the first home loss of the season for Bethune-Cookman (2-5) who has now dropped two of the last three meetings with the Orange & Black.

North Florida 79, Samford 71

The Samford women's basketball team fell, 79-71, at North Florida on the final day of the North Florida MTE Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena. With the loss, Samford fell to 2-8 on the season. North Florida improved to 2-6 with the win. Samford was led in the loss by Emily Bowman with 15 points and eight rebounds. Sadie Stetson added 14 points for the Bulldogs. For North Florida, Jasmynne Gibson had 20 points and seven rebounds. Jazmine Spencer contributed 14 points for the Ospreys.

FGCU 61, Chattanooga 53

A late push from Chattanooga women's basketball wasn't enough on Saturday night in Fort Myers, as the Mocs ultimately fell 61-53 to Florida Gulf Coast in the team's final game at the FGCU Homewood Suites Tournament. The Mocs at one point trailed by as much as 15 points to the Eagles, but UTC battled its way back to a one-point third-quarter deficit to remain in the game. The late push by Chattanooga was ultimately thwarted, however, with three-point shots falling for FGCU in the fourth quarter to help the Eagles escape with a win on their home floor.
