SPARTANBURG, S.C.&nbsp;– Four hundred and forty three student-athletes earned spots on the Fall 2023 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Thursday. Each of the SoCon's 10 full member institutions had at least 26 honorees, representing the sports of men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's soccer and volleyball. To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the fall semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion. Thirty-six student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs, with Mercer leading the way with seven. The league's nine Football teams led the way with 126 academic all-conference selections, while the 10 women's soccer teams were second with 111 and the 10 women's cross country programs were third with 61. The nine volleyball teams had 53 selections, the six men's soccer teams had 50 selections and the 10 men's cross country teams followed with 42. Furman led all schools with 62 members on the academic all-conference team, followed by ETSU with 58. Samford and Wofford finished with 57 and 48 selections, respectively. The 443 total selections are the most in SoCon history and the 36 perfect GPAs is the second-most selections. The record of 37 perfect GPAs was set in the fall of 2021.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman football student-athlete <dfn><a data-airgap-id="59" href="https://furmanpaladins.com/sports/football/roster/bryce-stanfield/5403" rel="smarttag" rev="5403">Bryce Stanfield</a></dfn> passed away today after suffering a medical emergency while attending an early Wednesday morning workout in Paladin Stadium.  He was 21 years old. 
 
"We are heartbroken beyond measure with Bryce's sudden passing and ask that everyone, first and foremost, lift up his parents, Fred and Teri Stanfield and their family, in prayer on this day and in the days ahead," said Furman head coach <dfn><a data-airgap-id="60" href="https://furmanpaladins.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/clay-hendrix/700" rel="smarttag" rev="700">Clay Hendrix</a></dfn>.   
 
"There are so many more who are really hurting — namely Bryce's teammates, coaches and staff, classmates, friends, and the entire Furman community and beyond," Hendrix added  "Bryce was an outstanding young man and an equally fine student, football player, and friend.  He was so much a part of who we are as a program and school, and was pivotal in our success on the football field and through giving of his time in outreach to our community. In every sense he was the best representative we could have.  His passing is one of the most difficult things Furman football has ever encountered, but our faith and so many wonderful memories Bryce provided us will help sustain us all in the days ahead."    
 
Stanfield, from Acworth, Ga., was conferred his Bachelor of Science degree in health sciences, magna cum laude, by Furman President Dr. Elizabeth Davis in Friday morning ceremonies surrounded by family and Paladin football teammates and coaches. 
 
"Our Furman Family is heartbroken by Bryce's passing, and we share our deepest condolences with family, friends, and teammates," said Jason Donnelly, Furman Vice-President of Intercollegiate Athletics. "Bryce was a beautiful soul, a loving son, loyal friend, tremendous teammate and great student. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers from our entire community. Bryce will be dearly missed but will be remembered in our hearts forever." 
 
A defensive tackle and three-year letterman for the Paladins, he saw action in all 13 games this past fall, totaling 13 tackles, including four tackles for-loss and 2.5 sacks, in the Paladins' 10-3, Southern Conference championship campaign. 
 
He played in eight games as a true freshman in 2021 and was credited with 19 tackles, including three sacks, on the way to earning SoCon All-Freshman Team honors.  As a sophomore in 2022 he appeared in all 13 games, working at both defensive end and defensive tackle in Furman's 10-3, FCS playoff season that saw him total 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks. 
 
In addition to his football contribution, he served in Furman's Heller Service Corps Men of Distinction and was an active participant in visiting patients at Greenville Children's Hospital and in reading to children in local schools. 
 
Stanfield was two-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection and was recently named to both the 2023 SoCon Fall All-Academic Team and College Sports Communicators Academic All-District squad. 
 
Memorial service arrangements will be announced later.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference’s 36-game league football schedule for 2024 is set to get under way Saturday, Sept. 14, with a pair of FCS playoff participants from last season when Mercer visits Chattanooga. 
  
Another solo SoCon game follows on Sept. 21 when Mercer hosts The Citadel. Three league games are set for Sept. 28, with ETSU visiting The Citadel, Furman hosting Samford and Wofford welcoming Mercer. 
  
VMI and Western Carolina are the final two SoCon squads to get its league slate underway on Oct. 5. The Keydets visit Samford, while the Catamounts welcome Wofford. Each Saturday from Oct. 5 to Nov. 16 features four SoCon games. 
  
Regular-season play wraps up for all nine SoCon squads on Saturday, Nov. 23, with the opening round of the FCS playoffs starting the following weekend. Three league games are set for the final day of the regular season. 
  
Full broadcast schedules will be announced later, but all nine schools’ home games will air on ESPN+ if not selected for national or regional broadcast.  
 
Furman, Chattanooga, Mercer and Western Carolina finished the 2023 campaign in the national rankings. Furman was No. 6 in the AFCA FCS Coaches’ Top 25 and No. 7 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25. Chattanooga was 17th in the AFCA poll and 14th in the Stats Perform poll, while Mercer was 20th in the AFCA poll and 17th in the Stats Perform poll. Western Carolina came in at No. 23 in the Stats Perform poll and received votes in the AFCA poll. Samford also received votes in the AFCA poll. 
  
Furman finished the 2023 campaign with a 10-3 record and went 7-1 in SoCon play, winning the league outright for the first time since 1990. The Paladins earned the No. 7 national seed in the NCAA Division I Football Championship, winning against Chattanooga before falling to second-ranked Montana, 35-28, in overtime in the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs. Montana would go on to play for the national title. Coach Clay Hendrix was the SoCon Coach of the Year and finished eighth in voting for the Stats Perform Eddie Robinson Award, which honors the national coach of the year. 
  
Chattanooga and Mercer each won a game in the FCS playoffs. The Mocs defeated No. 12/18 Austin Peay, 24-21, in the first round, while the Bears topped Gardner-Webb, 17-7, giving the Bears their first win in the FCS playoffs in program history. 
 
Thirty-two SoCon players earned All-American honors following the 2023 campaign, including 11 who claimed honors from multiple organizations. Six players – ETSU defensive back Sheldon Arnold II, Furman offensive lineman Jacob Johanning, Mercer wide receiver Ty James, wide receiver/return specialist Devron Harper and defensive back Lance Wise Jr., and Chattanooga defensive end Jay Person – were recognized by five organizations. Furman cornerback Travis Blackshear was selected by four organizations, while Western Carolina place kicker Richard McCollum received three nods. The Citadel long snapper Steele Judy and Samford wide receiver Brendan Jenkins and linebacker Noah Martin each had two selections.

MACON, Ga. – Athletics department officials at Mercer University announced Thursday morning that 21-year collegiate coaching veteran Mike Jacobs has been named as the football program's 21st head coach. 
  
Jacobs, who has compiled a 74-17 (.813) record across head coaching stops at both Notre Dame (Ohio) and Lenoir-Rhyne, boasts the nation's sixth-best winning percentage among active coaches at the NCAA Divisions I and II levels. He is fresh off of a 2023 campaign that saw him lead Lenoir-Rhyne to a 13-2 clip that was accentuated with an appearance in the semifinal round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. 
  
"I want to thank the search committee members for their endless hours of work in identifying the next leader of our football program. It was a joy to work alongside them," said Mercer Athletics Director Jim Cole. "Our goal throughout this process was to find not only a leader with a track record of success, but also one who will continue to build on the success that our program has already experienced. Mike Jacobs shares our values and our vision for Mercer Football, but also think that he is a leader that young men will want to play for. I am excited to welcome Mike, his wife, Lacey, and their two sons, Luke and Knox, to the Mercer Bears family." 
  
In eight campaigns as an NCAA Division II coach, Jacobs has mentored 17 student-athletes to all-region laurels, with seven of those standouts collecting all-America nods as well. His programs also boast 86 all-conference awards, including 62 in four seasons at Notre Dame, and six Academic All-America crowns. Former Notre Dame running back Jaleel McLaughlin was a two-time finalist for the Harlon Hill Award, including a runner-up finish in 2019, while former L-R wide receiver Dareke Young was selected in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. 
  
A three-time conference coach of the year recipient, he was also tabbed as the National Coach of the Year in 2018 by Don Hansen's Football Gazette. 
  
Jacobs, who succeeded former head coach Drew Cronic as the leader of the program in Hickory, N.C., prior to the 2020 campaign, skippered the Bears to a 32-9 record over the last four seasons, as well as the 2023 South Atlantic Conference championship and a trio of league divisional titles. L-R capped its most recent campaign, one which included the school's first NCAA postseason road victory, with a No. 4 national ranking as well. 
  
Jacobs led Notre Dame to a dominant run of success from 2016-19 as evidenced by a cumulative 42-8 (.840) record and a pair of Mountain East Conference championships. The Falcons racked up a 13-1 record and advanced all the way through to the semifinal round to cap the program's first-ever berth into the NCAA postseason in 2018, and returned to the sport's biggest stage the following season on the way to a 12-2 record and a berth into the NCAA quarterfinals. 
  
"My family and I are humbled to be joining the Mercer University Football family," Jacobs said. "Mercer is an elite institution that has competed at the highest level both on the field and in the classroom. We look forward to immersing ourselves in both the campus community and the city of Macon. Go Bears!" 
  
Jacobs, a former standout on the offensive line for coaches John Cooper and Jim Tressel at Ohio State from 1997-01, has stints on the coaching staffs at four other collegiate institutions as well, including one as a graduate assistant coach and offensive line assistant at Eastern Michigan for the 2002 and 2003 seasons. He later served as an assistant coach at Wilmington (Ohio), Purdue and California (Pa.), before accepting a position as the defensive line coach at Notre Dame in time for the 2014 season. He was promoted to defensive coordinator for the Falcons prior to the 2015 campaign.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman offensive guard <dfn><a data-airgap-id="57" href="https://furmanpaladins.com/sports/football/roster/jacob-johanning/5367" rel="smarttag" rev="5367">Jacob Johanning</a></dfn> and tight end <dfn><a data-airgap-id="58" href="https://furmanpaladins.com/sports/football/roster/mason-pline/5451" rel="smarttag" rev="5451">Mason Pline</a></dfn> have earned invitations to the 2024 Hula Bowl, scheduled to be played on Jan. 13 at FBC Mortgage Stadium in Orlando, Fla., it has been announced. 
 
This 78th Hula Bowl will be televised on CBS Sports Network beginning at noon. 
 
Johanning and Pline follow former Paladin All-America tight end <dfn><a data-airgap-id="59" href="https://furmanpaladins.com/sports/football/roster/ryan-miller/4977" rel="smarttag" rev="4977">Ryan Miller</a></dfn>, a 2023 Hula Bowl participant, as the latest Furman standouts to play in the historic postseason contest.  Miller is currently in his first year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 
 
Johanning and Pline were among key performers for Furman in its 10-3, Southern Conference championship season this fall.  The Paladins advanced to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs before falling to Montana, 35-28, in overtime.  Ranked among the FCS Top 10 all season and as high as second for one three-week stretch, Furman concluded the regular season ranked seventh. 
 
Johanning, who on Tuesday was named first team All-America by the Associated Press, was recognized as the SoCon's top offensive lineman by capturing the Jacobs Blocking Award this fall. A two-time consensus first team all-conference selection and All-America pick, the 6-foot-3, 276-pound Simpsonville, S.C., and St. Joseph's School product registered 39 starts and 2,652 play participations in his career.  He was also named to the SoCon All-Academic Honor Roll four times and was a three-time SoCon All-Academic Team honoree. 
 
Johanning, who sports a 3.53 grade point average, graduates from Furman this month with a degree in business administration. 
 
Pline joined the Furman program as a graduate transfer this summer after graduating from Ferris (Mich.) State, where he played on two NCAA Division II national championship teams. In his only season with the Paladins, the 6-foot-7, 260-pound Fowler, Mich., native started all 13 games and collected second team All-SoCon honors.  He was credited with 32 receptions for 287 yards and four touchdowns this year, including a career high nine grabs for 78 yards and a touchdown in the Paladins' playoff quarterfinal versus Montana.  His leaping 13-yard, fourth down touchdown reception with 13 seconds to go in the fourth quarter helped force the game into overtime. 
 
Pline holds an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Ferris State and is enrolled in Furman's Master of Arts in Strategic Design program.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman offensive guard Jacob Johanning has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all competition from Nov. 29 - Dec. 5.  The selection is made by the conference office. 
 
Johanning, a member of the all-conference first team and Jacobs Blocking Award winner, headed up a productive Furman ground game that produced 191 yards in the Paladins' 26-7 FCS second round playoff victory over Chattanooga. The Simpsonville, South Carolina, native registered 76 play participation for an offense that added 192 passing yards for 383 total yards on offense against the Mocs to advance to the playoff quarterfinals. 
 
The redshirt senior is pursuing a degree in Business administration and hold a 3.53 GPA.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach <dfn><a data-airgap-id="55" href="https://furmanpaladins.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/clay-hendrix/700" rel="smarttag" rev="700">Clay Hendrix</a></dfn> has been named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region II Coach of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), the organization announced today. 
 
Hendrix is among five regional coach of the year selections for the FCS.  The AFCA also announced regional coach of the year selections for the FBS, Division II, Division III, and NAIA. Winners are selected by active members of the association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions and will be honored on Tue., Jan. 9, during the 2024 AFCA Convention in Nashville, Tenn. 
 
Hendrix, now in his seventh season as head coach of the Paladins, has guided Furman to a 10-2 season to date, including a 7-1 Southern Conference mark that netted the program the outright SoCon championship and No. 7 seed in the 24-team FCS Playoffs.  Furman, which drew a first round playoff bye, defeated Chattanooga, 26-7, in second round playoff action on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinal round and Friday, 9:00 p.m. ET clash versus No. 2 seed Montana in Missoula, Mont., that will be televised on ESPN2. 
 
The 10-win season to date is the second straight for Furman under Hendrix, who coached the Paladins to a 10-3 record a year ago.  This year's FCS playoff appearance is the fourth for Furman with Hendrix at the helm (2017, '19, '22, '23). He sports a 51-28 record (.645) as head coach at his alma mater and has guided the Paladins to a pair of SoCon championships (2018 & '23). 
 
In claiming its all-time SoCon leading 15th crown this fall, Furman, which was a consensus No. 2 in both major FCS polls for three weeks, tied the school standard for consecutive league victories (13), including a program record for league road wins (8).  The 26-7 win over Chattanooga extended the Paladins' home winning streak to 10 games, and Furman is now 22-5 in their last 27 contests (.814). 
 
Now in his 30th season with Paladin football, which includes tenures as a player (1982-85), assistant coach (1988-06), and head coach (2017-present),  the Commerce, Ga., native has been part of 245 Furman wins over the years and had a hand in 11 of the program's 15 SoCon titles.  In addition, he played in the 1985 FCS (formerly I-AA) national championship game and was an assistant coach during Furman's 1988 national championship season and title game appearance in 2001. 
 
Hendrix is the sixth Furman coach to be honored as AFCA Region II Coach of the Year, joining DIck Sheridan (1985), Jimmy Satterfield (1988), and Bobby Johnson (1996, '99, and '01).  The Paladin mentors — Sheridan (1985), Satterfield (1988), and Johnson (2001) — went on to collect national coach of the year laurels.
