SoCon Softball Player, Pitcher of the Week announced

UNCG’s Brown and Furman’s Tufts honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG infielder Maycin Brown and Furman right-hander Sierra Tufts have been named the Southern Conference softball player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for games from April 15-21. The awards are selected by the league office.
 
Brown batted .538 for the week, assisting the Spartans to a pair of conference road wins at Western Carolina. In the team’s midweek contest versus No. 3 Duke on April 17, Brown, a fifth-year player, blasted a solo homer to center field in the fifth inning, logging one of the five Spartan hits in the contest. On April 19, the Summerville, South Carolina, native had two doubles and a run scored as UNCG defeated Western Carolina, 6-1, to take the opening game of the series. In game one of the squads’ doubleheader the next day, Brown had two hits, including a solo home run in the sixth inning, in UNCG’s 6-5 victory in eight innings. During game two, Brown was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs, a stolen base and two runs scored in a 13-5 setback for the Spartans.
 
Tufts made three appearances, throwing two complete games and earning a pair of victories, for the Paladins this past week. On April 17, the senior pitched five innings, striking out five batters and allowing one earned run in the team’s 4-3 setback to Queens. In the first ever matchup between Furman and Wofford in softball on April 19, Tufts threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out 10 batters in the Paladins’ 1-0 victory. The next day, the native of Chula Vista, California, logged another complete game, recording three strikeouts and giving up one run as Furman took the game by a score of 6-1. For the week, Tufts pitched 19.0 innings, striking out 19 batters and surrendering just two earned runs.
 
UNCG (27-21, 9-6 SoCon) hosts Charlotte on April 24, before welcoming league-leading Mercer (21-23, 10-5) for a weekend series on April 27-28. Furman (21-26, 6-9) travels to Chattanooga (30-13, 10-5) for a weekend series on April 27-28.
