Saturday's softball roundup

SAM - The Samford softball team hit the road in Southern Conference play to face UNCG in a three-game series. The matchup featured the first-place Bulldogs and the Spartans who trailed by just one game. The home side took a pitcher's duel 3-1 in the opener before the Dogs bounced back in game two 6-5. Samford's record moves to 28-16 with the win and they are 9-2 in conference play.
UNCG - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team split a doubleheader with Samford on Saturday taking game one 3-1 and then falling 6-5 at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
UNCG is now 31-12 overall and 8-3 in The Southern Conference (SoCon) and Samford is 28-16 overall and 9-2 in the league.
UTC - Chattanooga swept Furman Saturday in a Southern Conference softball double header in Greenville, S.C. The Mocs claimed the first win 7-0 and came back with a 9-0 five-inning victory in the second to improve to 28-11 overall and 7-3 in league play. Furman drops to 13-28 on the year and 3-8 against the SoCon.
Peja Goold matched her career-high for strikeouts and Acelynn Sellers drove in five runs in the Mocs run-rule second game shutout.
FUR - Chattanooga pitchers fired back-to-back shutouts as the Mocs claimed a 7-0, 9-0 sweep of Saturday's Southern Conference doubleheader versus Furman at Pepsi Stadium.
MER - Visiting Mercer pounded out 18 hits on the afternoon, including seven of the extra-base variety, and compiled a 7-for-17 clip with runners in scoring position on the way to a pair of wins, 4-2 and 10-2, at East Tennessee State on Saturday.
The victories snapped a five-game Southern Conference skid for the Bears (22-21, 3-7 SoCon) who logged their 13th and 14th victories away from Macon this season as well.
ETSU - East Tennessee State University softball remains winless in April after losing both games of its Saturday doubleheader to Mercer, 4-2 and 10-2.
The Bucs jumped out in front in the first game with a one-out, two-run double from Tiare Rieger that scored Whitney Boone and Leilani Coleman. That was all the ETSU offense mustered in the first game, though, and Rieger's double was the Bucs' lone extra base hit of the day.
Wofford 3, Western Carolina 2 (8 innings)
WOF - Wofford's softball program (26-15, 7-4 SoCon) took the opening two games against Western Carolina (20-22, 4-7 SoCon). In game one, Margaret Axelson pitched her 15th complete game of the season with some extra inning heroics that brought the Terriers a 3-2 victory. Game two saw the Wofford bats tack on three runs in the first inning to set the tone for the eventual 4-1 win.
WCU - Western Carolina's offense was stifled much of Saturday's doubleheader by Wofford's league-leading pitching staff as the Catamounts dropped a pair of close contests, rallying late before falling 3-2 in eight innings and dropping the backend of the twin bill 4-1 in Southern Conference action at the Catamount Softball Complex.
