UNCG wins the SoCon Softball Championship

Spartans defeat Samford on Sunday to win their fourth title

No. 1 UNCG 4, No. 2 Samford 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – No. 1 seed UNCG bested No. 2 seed Samford, winning 4-0 to clinch the conference title on Sunday at Frost Stadium at the SoCon Softball Championship presented by Chattanooga Tourism Company.

 

With their fourth SoCon tournament title, the Spartans (42-17) claimed the SoCon’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. The selection show will air on ESPN2 on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET. UNCG last won the tournament in 2023, which was also played at Frost Stadium.

 

The game’s first run came in the bottom of the second inning. Rylie Williams hit a solo shot to left field, putting the Spartans ahead 1-0. One inning later, Avery Bouquin tripled the lead with a two-run homer of her own, giving UNCG a 3-0 lead.

 

The Spartans picked up an insurance run in the sixth inning. Madelyn McKinnon doubled off the right field wall, bringing Williams in to score.

 

Brooklyn Shroyer, the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, threw another gem, tossing a complete game, allowing just one hit and striking out seven batters. For the tournament, Shroyer went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA over 18 innings, logging 22 strikeouts and giving up just five hits.

 

Williams was 3-for-3 in the game at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Nya South drew three walks and scored a run for UNCG.
