SPARTANBURG, S.C. – App State’s Caleb Smith has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Feb. 15-21. The selection is made by the league office.
Smith, who is ranked No. 14 at 125 pounds, went 3-0 last week in three conference duals. The High Point, North Carolina, native defeated 32nd-ranked Campbell wrestler Anthony Molton, 4-1, on Sunday. Later that day, Smith won a decision, 9-3, over Presbyterian’s Dominic Chavez. Smith would grab his third win of the day against Hale Robinson of Davidson with a pin in the second period.
App State (12-2, 8-0 SoCon) defeated Campbell (16-9, 7-1), 22-14, in a matchup of the conference’s top two teams. The Mountaineers won their other two duals via shutout, with a 43-0 victory over Presbyterian (4-10, 1-6) and a 47-0 triumph against Davidson (2-11, 1-7), to clinch a second straight regular-season title and undefeated run through the SoCon.
App State will compete again at the SoCon Championship on Saturday, March 4, at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, North Carolina.
