SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Jaron Dougherty has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for games played Dec. 14-20 after scoring 30 points, pulling down eight rebounds and shooting 52.4 percent from the floor in a 71-62 win over UAB on Sunday. The award is selected by the league office.
In the win, Dougherty, a senior, led all players in scoring and became the first SoCon to score 30 points in a contest this season. The native of Buford, Georgia, went 11-for-21 from the field, 1-for-1 from 3-point range, and 7-for-10 from the free- throw line in the Bears’ lone contest of the week. She added an assist and a steal in 37 minutes of play.
Mercer (7-5) hosts UNCW on Tuesday, Dec. 28, and wraps up nonconference play at home against Lagrange on Friday, Dec. 31, before kicking off conference action with a Jan. 6 home contest against ETSU.
