SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 2023 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships will take place Friday, Oct. 27, at Ivey M Redmon Sports Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina. UNCG is hosting the championships for the first time since 2014.

The women’s 5K race begins at 10 a.m. ET, and the men’s 8K will follow at 10:45 a.m. ET. At the conclusion of the women’s race, there will be an awards ceremony to recognize the top teams and individual runners.

Furman’s men’s and women’s squads are both the ten-time defending champions of the event. The Paladins claimed the 2022 team titles at Johns Island County Park on Johns Island, South Carolina, with Dylan Schubert earning the men’s individual title and Bethany Graham winning the women’s race, both earning runner of the year honors.

Paladin coach Robert Gary was named the SoCon Coach of the Year for the ninth straight year on the women’s side after Furman set a women’s championship record with a perfect 15 points.

ETSU coach George Watts won the SoCon Coach of the Year on the men’s side after a second-place team finish. The Bucs also had six all-conference selections including two all-freshmen selections. Sophomore runner Evan Guzman finished second with a time of 24:05.5.

Furman’s men, who are ranked 12th in the latest USTFCCCA poll, are seeking to become the first SoCon team to win 11 straight men’s titles. They are currently tied with William & Mary (1966-75) with ten straight titles. The Paladin women, who are ranked No. 24 in the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll, already own the longest streak of women’s titles in league history. They currently share the longest active conference championship streak in the nation with New Mexico of the Mountain West Conference.

The Furman women have turned in the top six 5K times this season with Madelynne Cadeau claiming the top time of 17:14.90.

ETSU sophomore Jason Bowers owns the top 8K time in the league this season at 23:10.20, which he accomplished at the Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Oct. 14. Furman senior and defending champion Dylan Schubert is second with his 23:55.30 effort at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin.

Bowers was named the SoCon Runner of the Week three consecutive times this season, becoming only the fifth men’s runner to be selected three or more times in a single season. Bowers, Schubert, and Evan Guzman, also of ETSU, are the only three SoCon runners to have posted sub-24-minute 8K times so far this season.
