Two SoCon Runners Earn All-American Honors

Bowers finishes 22nd at NCAA Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – ETSU's Jason Bowers loves the big stage. 
 
It showed on Saturday as the Buccaneer newcomer earned All-American honors after placing 22nd at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which was held at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va. 
 
Bowers finished the 10K course with a time of 29:32.7. In a field of 254 runners, the Buccaneer sophomore waited patiently and climbed up the leaderboard throughout the race to finish in the top-25. Bowers was in 95th at the 1000m mark and moved into the top-50 (47th) at the midway point of the race. With 3000m remaining, Bowers was in 35th and he kicked it into another gear as he jumped 13 runners down the stretch to move into 22nd. 
 
Harvard's Graham Blanks won the race with a time of 28:37.7, while New Mexico's Habtom Samuel (28:40.7) and Stanford's Ky Robinson (28:55.7) also finished on the podium. 
 
Oklahoma State won the team title as the second-ranked Cowboys finished with 49 points and top-ranked Northern Arizona finished second with 71 points. 
 
Bowers capped off an illustrious first year in the Blue & Gold which saw him set two school records, win two individual titles, earn three Southern Conference Runner of the Week honors, finish runner-up at the SoCon Championship and fifth at the NCAA Regional and be named SoCon Runner of the Month for September. 


 

FURMAN'S SCHUBERT EARNS SECOND-CONSECUTIVE ALL-AMERICA CITATION AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

EARLYSVILLE, VA. -- Furman's Dylan Schubert earned his second-consecutive All-America citation Saturday at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championships at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va., while the 13th-ranked Paladin women's team placed 24th. 

A senior from Loveland, Colo., Schubert, who earned the fourth cross country All-America scroll in the history of the Paladin men's program, turned in a time of 29:35.5 on the 10K course to place 24th.  The 2023 SoCon Men's Runner of the Year, he won the men's individual title the NCAA Southeast Region Championship last Friday, setting a new course record and becoming the first individual region champion in the history of the Furman cross country program.  Schubert is the first two-time All-American in Furman men's cross country history after placing 11th at last year's championship. 

On the women's side, sophomore Carly Wilkes paced the Paladins with a time of 20:33.0 on the 6K course, taking 80th place.  No. 2 N.C. State edged out top-ranked Northern Arizona by one point to win the team title with 123 points, while fourth-ranked Oklahoma State finished third with 156 points.  Furman tallied 503 points for 24th.  

Junior Kaylie Armitage finished 97th with a time of 20:40.3, and sophomore Jenna Mulhern was 131st at 20:53.0.  Junior Sierra Bower crossed the line in 21:02.7 for 153rd place, and senior Abigial Robertson completed the Furman scoring in 178th place at 21:16.2.  Sophomore Emma Jones placed 181st at 21:18.1.  

The Paladin women, who, along with the men's team, each won their 11th-straight Southern Conference title in 2023, made their fifth trip to the national championship meet.  The Paladins placed seventh at the national meet in 2017 and posted a ninth-place finish in 2019.  Before Saturday's meet, Furman most recently appeared at the national championships in 2020, when the Paladins finished 31st.
