Three of top four seeds advance at Men’s Tennis Championship

Semifinals begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Three of the top four seeds advanced out of the quarterfinals of the 2024 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championship on Thursday, with No. 5 Chattanooga downing No. 4 Mercer for the first upset of the tournament. The tournament is being contested at the Champions Club, with the semifinals set for Friday at 2 p.m.
 
No. 1 seed ETSU will meet the fifth-seeded Mocs and No. 2 seed Samford will face No. 3 seed Furman for the right to advance to Saturday’s title match.
 
No. 1 ETSU 4, No. 8 UNCG 0
 
Regular-season champion and five time defending tournament champion ETSU began its quest for a title sweep by blanking eighth-seeded UNCG, 4-0.
 
The Spartan tandem of John Gabelic and Hampus Johansson edged ETSU’s Pedro Cressoni and Lucas Britez, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles to start it off for UNCG, but ETSU’s second-team all-conference tandem of Milledge Cossu and Francisco Lamas outlasted UNCG’s Christopher Johns and David Flisberg, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles to even up the match, before the Bucs’ Dimitri Badra and Adam Nagoudi clinched the point for ETSU with a 6-3 win over Luke Thomson and Timofiy Khrystyuk, 6-3, at the No. 2 slot.

After Cossu defeated Gabelic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, the Bucs’ Francisco Lamas eased past Tejas Wall 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5 flight and Lucas Britez followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory of his own over UNCG’s Luke Thomson at No. 6. Cossu clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win in the No. 2 singles spot.

No. 5 seed Chattanooga, which is seeking its’ 13th SoCon tournament title, shut out fourth-seeded Mercer, 4-0.  

Chattanooga’s Ryan Mudre and Jaxon Lamb posted a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Mercer’s Samuel Barrow and Samuel Macleod, before UTC’s Cortland Grove and Jordan McClure defeated MU’s Nemanja Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux by an identical, 6-2, count.
 
Second-Team All-SoCon selection Gabriel Castillo began singles play for the Mocs with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2 before Grove followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 to give Chattanooga a 3-0 advantage.

Mercer's Victor Putter won the No. 6 singles with a score of 6-2, 6-1 before Samford's Mudre clinched the match at No. 4 by rallying for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory.

With Furman looking for its 15th tourney championship, the Paladins notched a 4-2 quarterfinal victory over No. 6 seed Wofford.

The Paladins won the doubles point after Cole Burnam and Connor Laymon defeated Wofford’s Will Fullett and Ian Rasheed, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot and the tandem of Ben Cahill and Emil Westling edged Alex Horn and Ashe Ray, 6-3, at No. 2.

Furman’s John Rado built the Paladins lead to 2-0 after notching a 6-1, 6-2, win past Wofford’s Jack Deveney at No. 4, before the Terrier’s Ashe Ray defeated Westling, 6-4 6-0, at the No. 3 spot. Furman’s Elijah Poritzky countered by outlasting Max Graham, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, at No. 1 singles. However, Fullett knocked off Burnam in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 to get the Terriers within 3-2 with two flights remaining. Laymon then clinched the victory for Furman with a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 win at No. 6.

Second-seeded Samford topped No. 7 seed The Citadel by a 4-1 count.

Samford claimed victories at both No. 1 and No. 2 spots to win the first point of the contest, with the first-team all-SoCon duo of Maxwell Giddens and Sandeep Mohandoss defeating Hayden Shoemake and Sebastian Kamieniecki, 6-3. Santiago Arredondo and J.B. Pickard followed with a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Ted Bagwell and Teo Cariov.  
 
On the singles side, Mohandoss defeated Kamieniecki, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2 position, to give Samford a 2-0 lead. At No. 5, Pickard defeated Luke Robins, 6-2, 6-1, to boost Samford’s lead to 3-0. The Citadel’s Cariov then defeated Darcy Nicholls, 7-5, 6-4, before Samford clinched the win when Arredondo rallied for a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Bagwell.
