SoCon Men’s Tennis Championship Pairings Announced

ETSU claims third regular-season title in four seasons, No. 1 seed in SoCon tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Regular-season Southern Conference champion ETSU earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SoCon Men’s Tennis Championship, which will be contested April 18-20 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
 
The Bucs finished the regular season with a 4-3 win at The Citadel last Wednesday (April 10), pushing their overall record to 10-9 and their league mark to a perfect 7-0. ETSU, which has won the tournament every year it has been contested since rejoining the SoCon in 2014-15, will square off with No. 8 seed UNCG (6-15, 0-7 SoCon) in the first round of the tournament on Thursday at 1 p.m. The matchup will mark the first meeting between the two squads in the quarterfinal round of the tournament since 2015. ETSU is 3-0 all-time against the Spartans in the tournament, also winning their matchups in 2001, 2002 and 2017.
 
On the same side of the bracket, No. 4 seed Mercer faces No. 5 seed Chattanooga at 1 p.m. Thursday. The Bears, who reached last year’s semifinals, went 7-12 overall and 4-3 in SoCon play this season, including a 5-2 decision over the Mocs on April 7. Chattanooga (9-14, 3-4 SoCon), which won its first SoCon regular-season title in program history a year ago, will be seeking its first SoCon tournament title since 2000 and its 13th overall. Thursday’s matchup will mark the first meeting between the Bears and Mocs in the SoCon tournament.
 
In the bottom half of the bracket, No. 3 seed Furman faces No. 6 seed Wofford at 3 p.m. Thursday. The Paladins, who will be vying for their league-record 15th tournament title and first since claiming consecutive crowns in 2008 and 2009, went 12-11 overall and 5-2 in league action this season, downing Mercer, 4-3, on Sunday. The Terriers, who finished league play with a 7-11 overall record and a 2-5 league mark, will be seeking their first SoCon title. Furman captured a 6-1 home win over Wofford on April 10 and the Paladins are 4-0 against the Terriers all-time in the tournament, including three wins in quarterfinal matchups.
 
No. 2 seed Samford faces No. 7 seed The Citadel (8-21, 1-6) on Thursday at 3 p.m. Samford, which reached the 2022 tournament title match, went 13-7 overall and 6-1 in SoCon play this season, including a 7-0 decision over The Citadel on March 27. Thursday’s matchup will mark the teams’ first meeting in the SoCon tournament.
 
Friday’s semifinals are at 2 p.m., with Saturday’s title match set for 1 p.m.
 
April 21 will serve as the rain date for the championship.
