SoCon Men’s Tennis Championship Pairings Announced

Three way tie for regular-season crown between ETSU, Mercer, and Samford; ETSU gets No. 1 seed

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The SoCon Men’s Tennis regular season ended in a three-way tie for first between ETSU, Mercer, and Samford. The tie breaker to determine the first seed came down to the best overall team score, which placed ETSU (40-9) in the No. 1 position. The SoCon Men’s Tennis Championship will be contested April 17-19 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The Bucs finished the regular season with a 7-0 win at The Citadel on Saturday, pushing their overall record to 12-6 and their league mark to 6-1. ETSU, which has won the tournament every year it has been contested since rejoining the SoCon in 2014-15, will square off with No. 8 seed The Citadel (4-24, 0-7 SoCon) in the first round of the tournament on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. The Bucs and Bulldogs met in SoCon quarterfinal play two years ago in the 2023 tournament, which ETSU won, 4-0.

On the same side of the bracket, No. 4 seed Chattanooga faces No. 5 seed Furman at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. The Mocs, who reached last year’s semifinals, went 13-10 overall and 4-3 in SoCon play this season, including a 5-2 decision over the Paladins on April 4th. Furman (7-14, 3-4 SoCon) will be seeking its first SoCon tournament title since 2009 and its 15th overall. Thursday’s matchup will mark the tenth meeting between the Mocs and Paladins in the SoCon tournament, with Furman leading the series, 5-4.

In the bottom half of the bracket, No. 3 seed Samford faces No. 6 seed UNCG at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The Bulldogs who will be vying for their third tournament title and first since claiming the crown in 2013, went 16-5 overall and 6-1 in league action this season, downing UNCG, 6-1, on March 29th. The Spartans finished league play with a 9-13 overall record and a 2-5 league mark. The Bulldogs are 3-0 against the Spartans all-time in the tournament, with all three matchups coming in the quarterfinals.

No. 2 seed Mercer faces No. 7 seed Wofford (6-12, 1-6) on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. The Bears went 11-7 overall and 6-1 in SoCon play this season, including a 7-0 decision over the Terriers on April 8th. Thursday’s matchup will mark the teams’ fourth meeting in the SoCon tournament.

Friday’s semifinals are at 10:00 a.m., with Saturday’s title match set for 1 p.m.
