ETSU’s Oscar Martinez named SoCon player of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Oscar Martinez has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all competition from March 17-23. The selection is made by the league office.

Martinez, who won the honor for the fourth time this season, led ETSU to a pair of wins in Florida last week playing in the No. 1 spot in singles and doubles. In a 6-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast on March 17, the junior won, 7-5, 6-4, over Tanner Povey in singles, and teamed up with Martin Vergara for a 6-3 victory in doubles. The next day against Florida Atlantic, Martinez won, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, over Mark Havlicek, and combined with Vergara for a 6-4 win in doubles, as the Bucs defeated the 71^st-ranked Owls, 4-1. The native of La Guaira, Venezuela, is currently 13-1 in singles play this spring.

ETSU hosts Wofford on March 27, before traveling to Samford on March 29.
