ETSU’s Oscar Martinez named SoCon player of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Oscar Martinez has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all competition to this point in the spring. The selection is made by the league office.

Martinez competed in the No. 1 flight for ETSU in each of its four matches so far in the 2026 calendar year. On Jan. 9, Martinez began his spring season with a 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) victory over Tennessee’s Drago Cazacu. Alongside partner Martin Vergara, the junior was also part of two doubles victories against Tennessee as the pair defeated the Vols’ Cazacu and Piotr Siekanowicz, 7-6 (7-4) in the first matchup and 6-3 in the second tilt. Martinez and Vergara are ranked No. 61 in the ITA National Poll as a doubles tandem.

The native of La Guaira, Venezuela, had both his singles and doubles matches against top-ranked Wake Forest go unfinished on Jan. 11. He was ahead in his singles match, 6-4, 5-3, and the doubles match was tied at 3-3. Two days later, Martinez defeated Eastern Kentucky’s Nuno Pinheiro, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, in singles, before combining with Vergara for a 7-5 doubles win, as the Bucs won the match 4-3.
