Men’s soccer players of the week announced
Furman’s Bustamante, VMI’s Murphy honored
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman forward Wilfer Bustamante and VMI goalkeeper Zack Murphy have been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from Sept. 17-23.
Bustamante, a freshman forward, scored two goals, including the game winning goal for the Paladins in their 4-2 victory over No. 23 College of Charleston on Tuesday. The Greenville, South Carolina, product was efficient in his 36 minutes of play taking two shots, resulting in a goal in the 73rd and 79th minutes of the game. Furman registered all of its goals in the final 18 minutes to pull of the upset.
Murphy, a junior, turned in a clean sheet for the Keydets this week in a 0-0 draw at Saint Peter’s. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native played all 90 minutes in goal, making six saves on nine shots, six of which were on target. The shutout represents Murphy’s second of the season.
Furman (3-2-2) hosts Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, while VMI (3-4-1) is off this week in preparation for a road game at Radford on Oct. 2.
