Men’s soccer players of the week announced
Mercer’s Segun Afolabi and Trevor McMullen honored
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer forward Segun Afolabi and goalkeeper Trevor McMullen have been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition Sept. 24-30.
Afolabi, a senior forward, scored two goals, including the game winning goal, for the Bears in their 3-0 victory over Air Force on Saturday. The Atlanta, Georgia, product’s goals came in the 51st and 85th minutes of the game, with his first goal being credited as game winning. Afolabi was also credited with an assist to Barzee Blama in the 80th minute. His five points were the most by a Bear in a single game since Aug. 25, 2022.
McMullen, a graduate student, turned in two clean sheets for the Bears this week including a 0-0 draw at No. 3 North Carolina. The Decatur, Georgia, native made four saves on four shots on goal against the Tar Heels, then made five saves against Air Force to produce a second shutout for the week. McMullen leads the nation with seven shutouts this season.
Mercer (4-2-4) hosts UNCG on Saturday, Oct. 5 in the Southern Conference opener.
