Saturday's Men's Soccer Roundup

UNCG 1, VMI 0

The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team edged out a 1-0 victory over Virginia Military Institute (VMI), 1-0, in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field. Senior Yoshiya Okawa scored the only goal on a free kick in the 30th minute to lift the Spartans to victory. In goal for the Spartans, junior Tim Baerwalde made two saves for his second clean sheet as a Spartan and the fifth of his college career.

VMI Men's Soccer kicked off its three-game homestand with a challenging loss to UNC Greensboro, who received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, at Patchin Field Saturday afternoon. The Keydets limited the Spartans' offensive opportunities, resulting in a 1-0 score. Going into the final week of the regular season, VMI holds the sixth seed while UNCG can move up to as high as second. Both teams will play one last Southern Conference match next weekend with the Keydets hosting Wofford and the Spartans battling East Tennessee State.

ETSU 1, Furman 1

Looking to secure an outright conference crown with a win, the Buccaneers left themselves some more work to do to accomplish that feat for a second straight season. A win over the Paladins would've put ETSU at 12 points heading into next weekend's regular season finale. However, with Saturday's draw, the Bucs are at 10 points, while Furman and UNCG are both at seven. ETSU and UNCG will play next Saturday in Greensboro, while the Paladins and Mercer meet in Greenville, S.C.

Furman and East Tennessee State played to a 1-1 draw in Southern Conference men's soccer action Saturday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium in Johnson City, Tenn. With the deadlock, ETSU moved to 5-5-4 on the year and maintained its lead in the SoCon regular season title race with a 3-0-1 league mark. Furman, 7-3-3 overall, fell into a second-place tie with UNCG at 2-1-1 in the conference.

Wofford 1, Mercer 0

The Mercer men's soccer team fell to the visiting Wofford Terriers 1-0 at Betts Stadium on Saturday night. The Bears controlled possession early in the match, with Segun Afolabi putting up the first shot of the night in the first minute. Mercer threatened again the 31st minute, but the Bears were not able to get a shot off before a Wofford clearance.
