SoCon Men’s Soccer Players of the Week Announced
UNCG's Francis, Furman’s Wagner Deliver Clutch Performances
SPARTANBURG, SC – UNC Greensboro midfielder Keaviano Francis and Furman defender Ryan Wagner were named Southern Conference offensive and defensive players of the week for matches held from August 25-31.
Francis (East London, South Africa / Noordgesig Secondary) took a pass from Lasse Dahl in the 23rd minute against Sun Belt favorite West Virginia, putting home the equalizer in a 1-1 draw. Francis’ effort was the lone shot on goal for the No. 15 Spartans. The senior standout leads UNCG with four points so far this season.
Wagner (Leawood, KS / Blue Valley North HS) delivered the game winner in No. 21 Furman’s 4-3 win at home over No. 22 Duke at home, giving head coach Brandon Tucker his first career win with the Paladins. Wagner took a pass from Wilfer Bustamante in the 76th minute to put Furman up 4-2 and helped hold off the Blue Devils over the final four minutes after the lead was trimmed to one goal.
Wagner also played a key role in Furman’s 0-0 draw at UNC Wilmington.
UNC Greensboro (1-0-2) begins a three-game road swing on Tuesday night at Davidson (7:00 pm / ESPN+). Furman (1-1-2) plays at Davidson on September 4 (6:00 pm / ESPN+)
