Furman Advances To Third Round of NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament
Paladins Will Host Hofstra Next Weekend in Quarterfinals
GREENVILLE, SC – Furman used a goal from Trip Campbell and another stellar defensive effort to top Western Michigan 1-0 Sunday in the NCAA Tournament's second round at Stone Stadium.
The Paladins (15-1-4) will host Hofstra next Sunday, November 30, at 1:00 pm. Hofstra upset top-seeded Vermont, the defending national champion, on Sunday afternoon.
Campbell's strike came in the 43rd minute off a nifty pass from SoCon Player of the Year Diego Hernandez. Hernandez took a feed from Wilfer Bustamente and quickly passed to Campbell off his heel for the difference maker.
It was Campbell's first goal of the season and marked the eighth assist of the season for Hernandez. Bustamante, a two-time All-SoCon selection, registered his seventh assist.
Western Michigan (8-10-4) had chances in the first half, but managed only one shot on goal. SoCon Goalkeeper of the Year Ivan Horvat turned that chance away and finished with his ninth clean sheet of the year.
A near-capacity crowd of 2,205 provided strong and vocal support for the home side.
Hofstra (14-5-0) earned an at-large bid after losing in the CAA semifinals to Stony Brook, but blanked Syracuse (2-0) in the opening round and got past No. 1 Vermont (3-2) with an overtime goal in the 96th minute.
