Two SoCon Programs Earn Spots in 2025 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship Field
Furman Selected as #16 National Seed, UNCG to Host First Round Match
SPARTANBURG, SC – SoCon Champion Furman was selected as a national seed Monday afternoon, and runner-up UNC Greensboro received an at-large bid to the 2025 NCAA Men's Soccer Championships.
"Having two programs earn bids to the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament is a tremendous testament to the quality of soccer played in the Southern Conference," said SoCon Commissioner Michael Cross. "Both Furman and UNC Greensboro have built their success through challenging non-conference competition and dedicated student-athletes and staffs. Their achievement shows 'It's All Here' in the SoCon.
"This success is driven by outstanding leadership on the sidelines under their head coaches, Chris Rich (UNCG) and Doug Allison (Furman). Doug's remarkable career has elevated Furman soccer to national prominence, and earning a seed and first-round bye in his final season is a fitting tribute to his legacy. We wish both programs the best as they represent the Southern Conference on the national stage."
Furman (14-1-1) is the #16 national seed and will host the winner of a first-round match between Clemson (8-5-3) and Western Michigan (7-9-4) on Sunday, November 23, at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, SC (1:00 pm kickoff). The Paladins are making their second NCAA appearance in a row and will serve as host for the first time since 2007. Furman is ranked No. 2 in the most recent Top Drawer Soccer national poll.
UNC Greensboro (12-4-4) will host a first-round match against Elon (9-3-6) on Thursday, November 20 (5:00 pm kickoff). The Spartans are making their first appearance since 2022, when they advanced to the national quarterfinals following wins over Ohio State and Stanford. With a win, UNCG would travel to face second-seeded Virginia on Sunday. The Spartans played both Elon (0-0) and Virginia (1-1) to draws on the road during the regular season.
The Spartans are ranked No. 23 nationally by Top Drawer Soccer this week and, like Furman, have been a fixture in the national rankings all season.
UNCG's strength of schedule ranks No. 6 nationally in wins by previous opponents this season. The Spartans performed well against a tough slate, including a dominant win over Big South Champion and #10 national seed High Point and draws against NC State and Virginia. UNC Greensboro finished with a 2-0-3 record against non-conference foes in the 2025 NCAA field.
