Top Seed Furman Captures Second SoCon Men's Soccer Championship in a Row

Paladins Score in Second Overtime to Outlast UNC Greensboro

GREENVILLE, SC – Ryan Reid scored off a rebound in the second overtime period to lift top-seeded Furman to a 1-0 win over UNC Greensboro, delivering the Paladins their 16th SoCon Men's Soccer Championship tournament title.

Reid put his left foot on the carom after Wilfer Bustamante's header in the 107th minute, slipping the game-winner into the lower right corner. Bustamante's chance came off a terrific ball from Connor Stout.

The Paladins (14-1-4) have won two SoCon Championships in a row and have 16 since the event began in 1988. Head coach Doug Allison, in his 31st and final season in charge at Furman, won his 11th title.

The battle between a pair of top-20 teams lived up to its advanced billing, with both sides competing well throughout Sunday's title bout.

Furman, ranked fifth nationally, will await their seeding in the NCAA Championship, with that announcement coming during the selection show at 1:00 pm ET on Monday (NCAA.com). UNC Greensboro (12-4-4), ranked as high as 19th nationally this past week, remains in a strong position for an at-large bid after playing one of the nation's most challenging schedules.

SoCon Goalkeeper of the Year Ivan Horvat registered his sixth clean sheet of the season behind a strong Furman backline. Horvat turned away both Spartans' shots on goal, including one in the second overtime period, to keep the score tied.

The tightly contested match saw Furman hold a slight 9-7 edge in shooting, with six of those shots coming in the opening 45 minutes. The Paladins also had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

UNCG forward Arnaud Tattevin led the Spartans with three shots, including a rocket in the second half that missed high. He had another chance earlier in the second half that ricocheted off the crossbar. Keeper Seth Wilson turned away a pair of Furman shots in a full 106:16 between the posts.

Furman midfielder Diego Hernandez was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the 2025 SoCon All-Tournament squad by teammates Ryan Wagner, Braden Dunham, and Horvat. Tattevin, Teva Lossec, and Daniel Longo represented UNC Greensboro.

Furman's Jack Travis earned the SoCon Pinnacle Award, given annually to the student-athlete on the winning side with the highest GPA. The business major holds a perfect 4.00 GPA.
