SoCon indoor track & field specialty awards announced

Wofford sweeps women’s awards, VMI and Samford split men’s

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford earned all four women’s honors while Samford and VMI each claimed two men’s awards as the Southern Conference indoor track and field men’s and women’s specialty awards were announced Wednesday.

The awards were voted on by the league’s nine indoor coaches.

Samford graduate student Cagan Campbell, who earned the Heath Whittle Award (Most Outstanding Athlete) as the top point-scorer at the SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships, was voted the men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer after scoring 25 points at the SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama, native medaled in three events on the track, placing third in the 60-meter dash and followed that up with a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.72. Campbell capped his big Sunday with a win in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.42. Campbell helped the Bulldogs to their fifth straight men’s team title.

Wofford’s Jasmine Jefferson was named the women’s Most Outstanding Track Performer after posting a pair of wins. The senior from Knoxville, Tennessee, claimed the 400m and 200m title on Sunday, securing 20 points for the Terriers. She ran a personal best and meet record in the 400m with a time of 54.22, before setting another personal best in the 200m, finishing in 24.13 seconds.

Wofford’s Sherika Christie, the tournament MVP on the women’s side, earned Most Outstanding Field Performer and Female Freshman of the Year after collecting 25 points for the Terriers throughout the weekend. On Saturday, the St. Catherine, Jamaica, product took the women’s pentathlon crown, tallying 3641 points after wins in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.91, and the long jump, with a leap of 5.96 meters. Later that day, Christie competed in the long jump and shot put field events, coming in fourth and ninth, respectively. She finished her dominant weekend with the triple jump title, setting a new personal best of 12.38 meters.

VMI’s Keyandre Midgett, who won this award a season ago, was voted the Male Most Outstanding Field Performer after posting a pair of wins in the long jump and triple jump. The senior from Portsmouth, Virginia, finished first in the long jump on Saturday with a distance of 7.49 meters. On Sunday, he set a new facility record, at his home track at the Corps Physical Training Facility, with a leap of 15.57 meters and totaled 20 points for the Keydets for the weekend.
 
Keydet Rafe Clendenin was named the men’s Freshman of the Year after scoring 16 points for VMI. The San Antonio, Texas, native claimed second place after recording personal bests in the shot put and weight throw. On Saturday, Clendenin tossed a 15.18 in the shot put before producing a 15.60 meter weight throw on Sunday.
 
For the fifth straight season, Samford’s Rod Tiffin was awarded Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to their fifth consecutive Indoor Track and Field Championship. On the Women’s side, Wofford’s Johnny Bomar was honored as Coach of the Year after leading his Terriers to a second-place finish and specialty awards sweep.
