SoCon announces ITF athletes of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Matthew Smith and Samford’s Carter Ellis have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively. Additionally, Furman’s Megan Marvin and Western Carolina’s Lexie Durban claimed women’s track and field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.  

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Jan. 29 – Feb. 4.  

Smith competed in the Gamecock Challenge hosted by South Carolina on Feb. 1. Smith finished second in the mile with a time of 4:00.38. His performance is the fastest time in the SoCon this season. 

On. Feb. 2, Ellis finished fifth among competitors at the South Alabama Invitational in the pole vault. Clearing 5.23m, Ellis set a new personal best and now leads the conference with this performance.  

During the Bob Pollock Invitational on Feb. 1, Marvin finished second in the 800m with a time of 2:06.36. This time leads the SoCon this season and ranks Marvin 45th in the NCAA in the event. Also running the 1200 leg of the distance medley relay, Marvin helped the squad to a second-place finish with a time of 11:20.25, which established a new program record in the event. 

Durban won the women’s shot put at the VMI Winter Relays on Jan. 31. Durban threw for a 12.73m final mark, claiming a personal record for the Catamount freshman.  

Samford continues competition in Birmingham, Alabama, at the UAB Invite on Feb. 7. Furman returns to competition in Boston, Massachusetts, for the Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational on Feb. 8. Western Carolina will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational on Feb. 14 –15.
