BOSTON, Mass. -- Furman senior&nbsp;Carson Williams&nbsp;earned second team All-America honors in the mile Friday at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the The Track at New Balance, in Boston, Mass. &nbsp;A native of Raleigh, N.C., Williams was one of multiple runners to get tangled up in the next to the last lap of the event.&nbsp; He recorded a time of 4:20.88 to finish 15th in the event, where the top ten finishers were separated by just over a second.&nbsp; He qualified for the meet after ranking 16th nationally with a time of with a time of 3:55.46 in the event, a Furman program record which he posted Jan. 19 at the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, S.C. &nbsp;Williams, who also recorded a sub-4:00 mile last season, most recently won the 3,000m title and finished second in the 800m at the SoCon Indoor Championship.&nbsp; Last season he was honored as an All-American for the second-straight outdoor season after placing 11th in the 3,000m Steeplechase at the NCAA Championships.&nbsp;

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced its February athletes of the month Friday, highlighting the athletic excellence of 15 student-athletes across 11 sports during the month. 
  
BASEBALL 
PLAYER 
Marshall Toole, Wofford, Jr., Decatur, Ga. 
 
<ul>
	<li>Posted a .469 batting average (15-for-32), .564 on-base percentage and a .656 slugging percentage, recording four extra-base hits with a pair of doubles and two triples and seven walks</li>
	<li>Scored 14 runs and recorded eight RBIs</li>
	<li>Tied for tops in the nation by going a perfect 11-of-11 in stolen bases.</li>
	<li>Recorded at least one hit in all eight games with multiple hits in five, including a three-hit, four RBI-day against Fairleigh Dickinson</li>
	<li>Tied career-high with four stolen bases against FDU and equaling second place in Wofford's single-game record book.</li>

FURMAN'S WILLIAMS EARNS ALL-AMERICAN HONORS IN MILE AT NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS(32023)

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford earned all four women’s honors while Samford and VMI each claimed two men’s awards as the Southern Conference indoor track and field men’s and women’s specialty awards were announced Wednesday. 
 
The awards were voted on by the league’s nine indoor coaches. 
 
Samford graduate student Cagan Campbell, who earned the Heath Whittle Award (Most Outstanding Athlete) as the top point-scorer at the SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships, was voted the men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer after scoring 25 points at the SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama, native medaled in three events on the track, placing third in the 60-meter dash and followed that up with a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.72. Campbell capped his big Sunday with a win in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.42. Campbell helped the Bulldogs to their fifth straight men’s team title. 
 
Wofford’s Jasmine Jefferson was named the women’s Most Outstanding Track Performer after posting a pair of wins. The senior from Knoxville, Tennessee, claimed the 400m and 200m title on Sunday, securing 20 points for the Terriers. She ran a personal best and meet record in the 400m with a time of 54.22, before setting another personal best in the 200m, finishing in 24.13 seconds. 
 
Wofford’s Sherika Christie, the tournament MVP on the women’s side, earned Most Outstanding Field Performer and Female Freshman of the Year after collecting 25 points for the Terriers throughout the weekend. On Saturday, the St. Catherine, Jamaica, product took the women’s pentathlon crown, tallying 3641 points after wins in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.91, and the long jump, with a leap of 5.96 meters. Later that day, Christie competed in the long jump and shot put field events, coming in fourth and ninth, respectively. She finished her dominant weekend with the triple jump title, setting a new personal best of 12.38 meters. 
 
VMI’s Keyandre Midgett, who won this award a season ago, was voted the Male Most Outstanding Field Performer after posting a pair of wins in the long jump and triple jump. The senior from Portsmouth, Virginia, finished first in the long jump on Saturday with a distance of 7.49 meters. On Sunday, he set a new facility record, at his home track at the Corps Physical Training Facility, with a leap of 15.57 meters and totaled 20 points for the Keydets for the weekend. 
  
Keydet Rafe Clendenin was named the men’s Freshman of the Year after scoring 16 points for VMI. The San Antonio, Texas, native claimed second place after recording personal bests in the shot put and weight throw. On Saturday, Clendenin tossed a 15.18 in the shot put before producing a 15.60 meter weight throw on Sunday. 
  
For the fifth straight season, Samford’s Rod Tiffin was awarded Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to their fifth consecutive Indoor Track and Field Championship. On the Women’s side, Wofford’s Johnny Bomar was honored as Coach of the Year after leading his Terriers to a second-place finish and specialty awards sweep.

SoCon indoor track & field specialty awards announced(31953)

LEXINGTON, Va. – Samford won its record ninth straight women’s title and its fifth consecutive men's title Sunday at the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility. Samford’s Cagan Campbell earned the Heath Whittle Award as the men's Most Outstanding Athlete and Wofford’s Sherika Christie earned the women's Most Outstanding Athlete award. 
  
One new meet record was set, and one was tied Sunday. Wofford’s Jasmine Jefferson recorded a time of 54.22 in the women’s 400m beating the previous record of 54.61 set by Western Carolina’s Felisha Garren by just under four tenths of a second. Wofford’s O’Rell Fisher tied a 20-year-old meet record in the 60m dash with a time of 6.73. Furman’s Megan Marvin and Wofford’s Kerrington Johnson all became three-time winners. Furman’s Cameron Ponder and Megan Marvin became four-time winners in the men’s mile and women’s 800, respectively. 
 
The Samford women totaled 160.5 points on the day, more than tripling their day one advantage of 13.5 points over runner-up Wofford. The Bulldogs continue to stretch their record of most continuous team title to nine after breaking a tie with App State last year, who twice won seven straight team titles. 
  
The Terriers finished with 117 points for their third runner-up finish in four seasons. Furman was third with 92 points and Western Carolina finished for fourth with 83.66 points. The Bulldogs, Paladins, and Terriers won three events each Sunday, while VMIK won two. 
  
On the men’s side, Samford scored 188 points to outdistance runner-up Western Carolina, which scored 121.5. Furman was third with 112 and host VMI was fourth with 109. The Bulldogs claimed seven event wins Sunday, with Furman, VMI and Wofford winning two events apiece. 
 
 
Samford continued their dominance in the men’s heptathlon as freshman Samuel Werner scored 5,380 points after winning the 60m, long jump, high jump, 60mH, and 1000m. Bryce Williamson of Samford came in second with 4915 points and Western Carolina’s Damon Worley finished third with 4881 points. The Bulldogs banked 22 team points in the event. 
 
Moore defended his title in the 60-meter hurdles on Sunday, finishing in 7.80 seconds for his fifth career win in the event, after setting a meet record last year. 
  
Schubert took his second consecutive title in the 5,000-meter run, turning in a time of 14:05.6, beating the rest of the field by 13 seconds. Teammates Luke Taylor and Nicholas Goldstein finished second and third in the event for a podium sweep. The Paladins earned 31 points in the event. 
 
Midgett picked up the first title of the day, winning the triple jump with a leap of 15.57 meters, a new facility record. After Werner’s heptathlon win went final, Furman’s Cameron Ponder won the mile in 4:06.640, marking Furman’s eighth straight win in the event. After Moore’s title-defending run and  Wofford record-tying performance in the 60-meter-dash, and the Bulldogs’ Cagan Campbell finishing first in the 400m. Campbell would add another title later in the afternoon, tying for the win in the 200-meter dash as he and Wofford’s Cameron Dalton both turned in a time of 21.42. 
  
The Samford men scored their other three event wins in the 800 meter, 4x400-meter relay and high jump. Zephaniah Carico-McLennan ran a 1:51.27 in the 800m, the 4x400-meter relay team clocked 3:14.98., and freshman Arthur Chitty cleared 2.10m. 
  
VMI claimed their second event title in the weight throw, with Andrew Granger defending last year’s victory with a throw of 17.46 meters. Teammate Rafe Clendenin finish second for the Keydets to total 18 points in the event. 
 
The first four women’s events of the day to go final were won by different schools. Samford’s Hannah Daffin got things going with her third consecutive win in the weight throw, with her toss of 17.87 meters. 
  
Furman’s Abigail Robertson followed with a win in the mile, in 4:47.56, while Samford’s Amiel Dabney followed with her 60-meter hurdles title, in 8.57 seconds. VMI’s Eleyah Armstrong then won her second consecutive title in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.44 seconds. 
  
Wofford won their second title on Sunday when Sherika Christie claimed the women’s triple jump with a leap of 12.38m. VMI won their second title of the day as Taylor Hill cleared 3.82 meters in the pole vault. 
  
Jasmine Jefferson claimed Wofford’s third championship of the day in the 200 meter dash, producing a time of 24.13 while Sierra Bower earned Furman’s third event victory in the 5000 meter with a time of 16:26.02. 
 
Samford then closed out the women’s meet with a win in the 4x400-meter relay, with anchor Ayden Drake chasing down Wofford’s Van Der Linde to give the Bulldogs a four second win in 3:50.18. 
  
Samford’s Campbell scored a meet-best 27.5 points to claim Most Outstanding Athlete honors, adding a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash. 
  
Wofford’s Christie totaled 25 points for the meet, winning the pentathlon on Saturday and adding a fourth-place finish in the long jump to her triple jump victory. 
  
Samford’s Ethan Womack won the men’s Pinnacle Award, given to the student-athlete with the top grade point average on the winning team, while the Bulldogs’ Grace Lueders won the women’s Pinnacle Award. 
  
The NCAA will announce the field for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships on NCAA.com on Tuesday. The meet will be held March 8-9, 2024, at The Track @ New Balance in Boston, Massachusetts.

Samford men, women repeat as SoCon indoor track & field champions(31932)

LEXINGTON, Va. – Samford’s men and women lead the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships after Saturday’s first day of competition at the VMI Corps Physical Training Facility. Eleven event titles were determined on day one. 
  
Samford’s men totaled 60 points Saturday to hold a 17-point lead over Furman as they try to win their fifth straight championship. The Bulldog women are also comfortably ahead, as the eight-time defending championships put up 59.5 points on day to lead second-place Wofford by 13.5. 
  
Samford’s men and Furman’s men won two titles each, while VMI added one. On the women’s side, Wofford and Furman claimed two titles apiece, while Western Carolina and VMI also earned wins Saturday. 
  
Furman’s women’s team broke won distance medley relay for the eighth straight season. Camryn Wennersten, Callie Harper, Megan Marvin, and Sierra Bower turned in a time of 11:31.07, 14 seconds in front of second-place Samford. 
  
Among other highlights of the day, Wofford’s Sherika Christie who finished first in the pentathlon after winning the long jump and 60mH. Her 3,641 points represent Wofford’s fifth straight title in the event. 
  
 Furman’s Carson Williams successfully defended his title in the 3,000-meter run, with a time of 8:12.77, to lead the Paladins to first through fifth in the event totaling 33 points. 
 
The Paladins added 10  points in the DMR Saturday with Cameron Ponder, Christian Newman, Christopher Knight and Dylan Schubert won for the second year in a row with a time of 9:55.18, winning the event by 14 seconds. 
  
Wofford’s Ellie Sawicki turned in a heave of 13.66 meters on her final throw of the day to claim the shot put gold medal and add another 10 points to the team score 
  
Samford freshman Brenden Vanderpool led a Bulldog podium sweep in the pole vault, clearing 5.20 meters in his final attempt. Jed Sisco took second place after clearing 5.05m on his first attempt, and Walker Smith was third at 4.90 meters. Two more Bulldogs scored in the event as Samford claimed 31 points. 
  
Abigail Robertson claimed Furman’s fourth straight 3,000m women’s title, as she finished in 9:31.02, her second consecutive title in the event. The Paladins banked 21 points in the event. 
  
VMI’s Eleyah Armstrong won the long jump with a leap of 5.96 meters. 
  
The first men’s title of the day went to Samford’s Carl Henry, a freshman who won the shot put with a throw of 15.38 meters. 
  
WMI’s Keyandre Midgett won the long jump with a leap of 7.49. The Keydets scored 14 points in the event as Charles Male finished fifth with a jump of 7.13. 
  
Western Carolina took first place in the final field event of the day as Imani Boyd cleared 1.71 meters in the high jump.

Samford leads SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championships(31923)

LEXINGTON, Va.&nbsp;– Samford won its record ninth straight women’s title and its fifth consecutive men's title Sunday at the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility. Wofford’s Jasmine Jefferson recorded a time of 54.22 in the women’s 400m beating the previous record of 54.61 set by Western Carolina’s Felisha Garren by just under four tenths of a second. Wofford’s O’Rell Fisher tied a 20-year-old meet record in the 60m dash with a time of 6.73. Furman’s Megan Marvin and Wofford’s Kerrington Johnson all became three-time winners. Furman’s Cameron Ponder and Megan Marvin became four-time winners in the men’s mile and women’s 800, respectively.

 The Samford women totaled 160.5 points on the day, more than tripling their day one advantage of 13.5 points over runner-up Wofford. The Bulldogs continue to stretch their record of most continuous team title to nine after breaking a tie with App State last year, who twice won seven straight team titles.

 The Terriers finished with 117 points for their third runner-up finish in four seasons. Furman was third with 92 points and Western Carolina finished for fourth with 83.66 points. The Bulldogs, Paladins, and Terriers won three events each Sunday, while VMIK won two.

Samford men, women repeat as SoCon indoor track & field champions

LEXINGTON, Va.&nbsp;– Samford’s men and women lead the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships after Saturday’s first day of competition at the VMI Corps Physical Training Facility. Eleven event titles were determined on day one.
 &nbsp;
 Samford’s men totaled 60 points Saturday to hold a 17-point lead over Furman as they try to win their fifth straight championship. The Bulldog women are also comfortably ahead, as the eight-time defending championships put up 59.5 points on day to lead second-place Wofford by 13.5.
 &nbsp;
 Samford’s men and Furman’s men won two titles each, while VMI added one. On the women’s side, Wofford and Furman claimed two titles apiece, while Western Carolina and VMI also earned wins Saturday.

 Furman’s women’s team broke won distance medley relay for the eighth straight season. Camryn Wennersten, Callie Harper, Megan Marvin, and Sierra Bower turned in a time of 11:31.07, 14 seconds in front of second-place Samford.
 &nbsp;
 Among other highlights of the day, Wofford’s Sherika Christie who finished first in the pentathlon after winning the long jump and 60mH. Her 3,641 points represent Wofford’s fifth straight title in the event.

 &nbsp;Furman’s Carson Williams successfully defended his title in the 3,000-meter run, with a time of 8:12.77, to lead the Paladins to first through fifth in the event totaling 33 points.

 The Paladins added 10 &nbsp;points in the DMR Saturday with Cameron Ponder, Christian Newman, Christopher Knight and Dylan Schubert won for the second year in a row with a time of 9:55.18, winning the event by 14 seconds.

 Wofford’s Ellie Sawicki turned in a heave of 13.66 meters on her final throw of the day to claim the shot put gold medal and add another 10 points to the team score
 &nbsp;
 Samford freshman Brenden Vanderpool led a Bulldog podium sweep in the pole vault, clearing 5.20 meters in his final attempt. Jed Sisco took second place after clearing 5.05m on his first attempt, and Walker Smith was third at 4.90 meters. Two more Bulldogs scored in the event as Samford claimed 31 points.

 Abigail Robertson claimed Furman’s fourth straight 3,000m women’s title, as she finished in 9:31.02, her second consecutive title in the event. The Paladins banked 21 points in the event.

 VMI’s Eleyah Armstrong won the long jump with a leap of 5.96 meters.
 &nbsp;
 The first men’s title of the day went to Samford’s Carl Henry, a freshman who won the shot put with a throw of 15.38 meters.

 WMI’s Keyandre Midgett won the long jump with a leap of 7.49. The Keydets scored 14 points in the event as Charles Male finished fifth with a jump of 7.13.

 Western Carolina took first place in the final field event of the day as Imani Boyd cleared 1.71 meters in the high jump.

Samford leads SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championships

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place at VMI’s Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Virginia, this Saturday and Sunday. This year marks the 89th edition of the men’s championship and 37th women’s championship. VMI is hosting the meets for the seventh straight season. 
  
Samford swept the team titles again last year, with the Bulldog men claiming their fourth straight SoCon indoor title and the Samford women winning their eighth straight. The Bulldogs will seek to become the first SoCon women’s program to win nine straight titles, as they already hold the record for the longest streak of consecutive titles. 
  
Samford’s men scored 174.5 points to outdistance runner-up Western Carolina, which scored 122.33. ETSU was third with 102.5 and host VMI was fourth with 96.33. The Bulldogs claimed four event wins Sunday, with Furman, VMI and Western Carolina winning two events apiece. 
   
The Samford women totaled 183.33 points on the day, nearly doubling their day-one advantage of 32 points over runner-up Wofford. The Bulldogs broke a tie with App State, who twice won seven straight team titles, for the most consecutive championships in league history. 
This season’s power rankings – determined by the top eight times or scores that are reported by the schools for each event that will be conducted at this weekend’s championships – predict successful title defenses for both Samford programs. 
  
The Samford men totaled 153 points in the power rankings, less than 30 points ahead of second-place Western Carolina’s 125.32. Furman is close behind with 114 and VMI is fourth at 99. Samford boasts a healthy lead in the women’s power rankings with 191.66 points, well ahead of Wofford’s 127. Furman is third with 103 points. 
  
Spectators are welcome at the championships and day two of the meet will air live on ESPN+ beginning at noon Eastern, with Jason Patterson and Phil Cox on the call. Live results, daily recaps, photos, and video highlights can be found at SoConSports.com. 
  
Storylines: 
- Lexington, Virginia, is the site of the men’s event for the 42nd time, more than double the total of the next-highest sites, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Johnson City, Tennessee, which have hosted 18 times each. The men’s championship was contested in Lexington for 28 consecutive years from 1954-81. The women’s championship was held in Lexington for the tenth time last season. Prior to 2018, the last time VMI hosted the championships was in 2000. 
  
- The winners of 11 of the 15 individual men’s events and 12 of the 15 individual women’s events from last year’s meet return this season. 
  
- Five of the six superlative winners are back for their respective schools. They include men’s track MOA Cagan Campbell (SAM), women’s track MOA Abigail Robertson (FUR), men’s field MOA Keyandre Midgett (VMI), women’s field MOA Hannah Daffin (SAM), and Women’s Freshman on the year Jenna Mulhern (FUR) 
  
- Additionally, Samford coach Rod Tiffin is the defending coach of the year on both the men’s and women’s sides. He’s won the award six times on the men’s side, including in each of the last four seasons, and has claimed the award seven times on the women’s side. 
  
-Four meet records fell last year, one on Saturday and three on Sunday. One individual record setter and three of the four members of the record setting team are back in the field this year. 
  
-Samford accounted for two new records with Ty Kimblerlin scoring 5, 442 points in the heptathlon and Titus Moore turning in a time of 7.79 in the 60mH. 
  
-Furman accounted for the other two with Dylan Schubert running a 13:54.58 in the 5000m and the distance medley team consisting of Kaylie Armitage, Erin MacDevette, Camryn Wennersten, and Megan Marvin recording a time of 11:25.6. 
  
-Abigail Robertson claimed Furman’s third straight 3,000m women’s title, as she finished in 9:26.48 to win by more than seven seconds and is looking to defend her title this year. The next day, she won the 5,000-meter run in 16:23.42, finishing less than a second behind the meet record, to give Furman nine straight titles in the event. 
  
-Furman’s women’s team broke the meet record in the distance medley relay for the second straight season. Kaylie Armitage, Erin MacDevette, Camryn Wennersten and Megan Marvin turned in a school-record time of 11:25.60 to take nearly six seconds off the previous meet standard. The SoCon title was Furman’s seventh straight in the event. MacDevette is the only member who did not return this year. 
  
- Hannah Daffin will be looking to defend her shot put title and extend her career winnings to three conference titles. Last year, Daffin took gold with a throw of 14.21 meters. She currently leads the conference for the season with a throw of 13 meters. 
  
- Samford’s Bishop will be looking for her fifth straight title in the pole vault. Her top mark of 3.67 meters this season has her in third place in the conference. One of just three women to win the pole vault three times, last year she became the first four-time winner in SoCon history and is looking to extend that record to five. Samford has had a stranglehold on the event, winning it each year since 2018. 
  
- Furman’s Marvin will be chasing her fourth straight title in the 800-meter run. Her top time this season, the 2:09.65 she ran at the Carolina Challenge on Jan. 19, has her in third place in the conference this season. 
  
- Samford’s Brenden Vanderpool, Jed Sisco, and Walker Smith, the defending champion in the pole vault, are ranked one, two, and three, respectively, in the conference. Sisco won the event in 2022.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel’s Bradlee Jones has been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track athlete of the week, while Furman’s Camryn Wennersten and The Citadel’s Karmen Williams claimed women’s track and field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday. 
 
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Feb. 14-20. There were no men’s indoor field nominees this week. 
 
Jones competed at the USC Indoor Open in Columbia, South Carolina, where he broke The Citadel’s freshman record in the 60m dash. With a time of 6.92, the Greenwood, South Carolina, native set a new personal record, placing him third in the conference this season and third in The Citadel record book for the event. 
 
Furman’s Wennersten competed at the USC Indoor Open as well where she placed second in the 800m with a time of 2:08.59. The sophomore from Ridgewood, New Jersey, set a new personal record with her time, which placed her in the conference lead this season. 
 
Competing at the USC Indoor Open, The Citadel’s Karmen Williams took seventh place in the shot put with a new personal record of 12.64m, placing her third in the SoCon and fourth in The Citadel record book. That same day, the New Orleans, Louisiana, product took second in the weight throw with a toss of 16.39m, moving her into second in the conference. 
  
This is the first career recognition for all three honorees.
