ETSU leads SoCon Men’s Golf Championship following first-round play

Bucs’ Dodd-Berry leads at 7-under-par

GREENSBORO, Ga. – ETSU sits atop the leaderboard with a nine-stroke lead at the 2024 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship following the first round of play at par-72, 7,393-yard Oconee Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Georgia. ETSU’s Matthew Dodd-Berry holds the individual lead after shooting a 7-under-par 65.
 
The round started in less-than-ideal conditions that began early in the morning, with each golfer playing a portion of their round in the rain.
 
ETSU, which is ranked 20th in the latest Clippd rankings, holds a nine-stroke lead over Chattanooga, concluding the first round with a team score of 13-under-par 275. The Mocs finished the day with a 4-under 284 performance. Chattanooga’s Samuel Espinosa is tied for second on the individual leaderboard alongside defending champion Mats Ege of ETSU at 5-under 67.
 
Furman sits in third at 2-under 286, while UNCG is fourth, four strokes back of the Paladins at 2-over-pat 290. Mercer is in fifth place at 8-over 296, with Wofford following in sixth at 12-over 300. Samford shot a 14-over-par 302 to conclude the round in seventh and Western Carolina rounds out the field in eighth with a score of 17-over-par 305.
 
Chattanooga’s John Houk is fourth on the individual leaderboard at 3-under 69, while a quartet of golfers are tied for fifth at 2-under 70. Those finishers are Furman’s Harris Barth and Walker Crosby, UNCG’s Symon Balbin and Wofford’s Ben Jordan.
 
Three players representing three different schools are tied for ninth at 1-under 70. Those players are ETSU’s Jenson Forrester, Mercer’s Tobias Jonsson and Samford’s Matthew Smith. Three players are a shot back at even-par 72, highlighted by 2022 individual champion ETSU’s Remi Chartier, who is joined by Furman’s Ross Funderburke and UNCG’s Noah Connor.
