Goudelock & Arguello Named Athletes of the Year
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Southern Conference announced the recipients of the 2011 Male and Female Athlete of the Year Awards Tuesday (May 31). College of Charleston's Andrew Goudelock has been named the Bob Waters Male Athlete of the Year while Furman's Monica Arguello has been named the 2011 Southern Conference Female Athlete of the Year. Goudelock and Arguello will be honored as part of the league's annual Honors Dinner Wednesday night in Charleston, S.C.
A senior on the men's basketball team at CofC during the 2010-11 season, Goudelock is the first Cougar to earn the Athlete of the Year Award. He was named the league's 2011 Player of the Year and earned Honorable Mention All-America honors from the Associated Press. He helped the Cougars post a 26-11 (14-4 SoCon) record as College of Charleston earned a share of the South Division title.
Goudelock led the league and ranked fourth nationally with 23.7 points per game as a senior. He was named the league's Player of the Week four times as a senior. Goudelock scored at least 20 points in 27 games and topped the 30-point plateau six times, including a school-record 39-point effort against Dayton in the first round of the NIT.
The Stone Mountain, Ga., native finished his career as CofC's all-time leading scorer with 2,571 points, which ranked third all-time in the Southern Conference. He became just the 62nd player in NCAA history to record 2,500 points and ranks 39th on the NCAA's all-time scoring list.
A sociology major at College of Charleston, Goudelock spent time as a counselor at various youth summer basketball camps and volunteered his time working with the Charleston Boys & Girls Club.
Arguello becomes the seventh Paladin to win the Female Athlete of the Year Award and is the fourth FU women's tennis player to earn the honor, joining Megan Dunigan (2002), Mary Neill Hagood (2005) and Laura Gioia (2009). She was named the 2011 Southern Conference Player of the Year and was tabbed the 2011 Furman Female Athlete of the Year.
Originally from Lakeland, Fla., Arguello posted a 19-4 record at No. 1 singles, including a perfect 10-0 mark in conference matches. She finished the spring season on a 12-match winning streak and was ranked No. 67 nationally by the ITA, the highest ranking for any SoCon player.
Arguello finished her four-year career with a 39-1 record in conference matches and was a four-time first team all-conference selection. She won 67 career singles matches, the ninth-highest career total at Furman, and was named the league's Freshman of the Year in 2008.
An education major, Arguello was named to the SoCon Academic All-Conference Team and the ITA All-Academic Team. She has participated in a variety of community service efforts, including the Humane Society, Relay for Life, St. Anthony's Church and the Heller Fall Festival.
The Athlete of the Year Awards are selected annually by the Southern Conference athletics directors and a media member representing each conference school. The award recognizes athletic achievement, academic performance and civic involvement. Prior to 1990-91, the award was selected solely by members of the Southern Conference Sports Media Association. Beginning in 1991-92, the men's award was named after the late Bob Waters, who was Western Carolina's head football coach from 1969-88.
