SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference office has announced the seeding for the 2019 Ingles SoCon Women’s Basketball Championship presented by General Shale, which will begin Thursday, March 7, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
After completing a perfect 14-0 conference slate and claiming its second straight outright SoCon regular-season title, Mercer (22-7) earned the top seed.
The Bears, who boast two of the top six scorers in the league, will open up the tournament as they square off with No. 8 seed Western Carolina (4-25, 0-14 SoCon) on Thursday at 11 a.m. Mercer has won its last 34 regular season conference contests and was ranked No. 25 in this week’s CollegeInsider.com poll.
ETSU (10-20, 8-6 SoCon) and Wofford (15-4, 7-7 SoCon) are slotted at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, and will face off in Thursday’s second game at approximately 1:15 p.m. The two programs split the regular season meetings with each taking the contest on its home court.
Furman (17-12, 9-5 SoCon) is the No. 2 seed and will square off with Samford (10-19, 5-9 SoCon), the No. 7 seed, in the third quarterfinal game, slated for approximately 3:30 p.m. Furman swept both regular season meetings, including today’s contest in Birmingham, Alabama.
Chattanooga (13-16, 8-6 SoCon) earned the No. 3 seed by virtue of a tiebreaker over ETSU. The Mocs are set to square off against UNCG (11-18, 5-9 SoCon), who claimed the No. 6 spot in a tiebreaker over Samford. The two teams split in the regular season. Their matchup, the final of the day, is scheduled for approximately 5:45 p.m.
Semifinal action will take place on Friday and the women’s championship game will tip off on Sunday at 12 p.m.
All women’s basketball games will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center and are set to be broadcast on ESPN+. Sunday’s championship game will air on select Nexstar affiliates. For more information, visit SoConSports.com.
