SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Kahlia Lawrence has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week for games played Feb. 20-25, the conference announced Monday. The award is the second of the season and eighth of Lawrence’s career.
Lawrence averaged 20.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in the final weekend of the 2017-18 regular season as the No. 25 Bears completed a perfect 14-0 record in SoCon play and clinched their first-ever outright regular-season title.
The senior started the week off with 25 points and six rebounds in a win over Chattanooga on Feb. 22. Lawrence also chipped in one block and one steal while finishing 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.
On Feb. 24, the 5-8 guard posted 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in a win over ETSU. The game marked the final home game of Lawrence’s career as she finished 6-of-8 from the free throw line
The Columbus, Georgia, native leads the conference in scoring with 18.6 points per game and ranks among the top 15 in nine other statistical categories.
Mercer takes a 24-game winning streak into the SoCon Championship where they will open postseason play against No. 8 seed Western Carolina at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
