SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer forward Amanda Thompson has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week for games played Dec. 4-10 after averaging 14.0 points and 7.5 rebounds as the Bears went 1-1 on the week. The award is selected by the league office.
The senior made a career-high nine field goals and scored 18 points, tying a career high, in a 57-56 loss to ACC foe Florida State on Dec. 5. Thompson added eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in the close contest in Macon, Georgia. Three days later, the native of Hayesville, North Carolina, scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds in a 57-40 win over Charlotte. Thompson also finished with two blocks, two steals and one assist in the win.
The preseason all-conference selection is third in the SoCon in rebounding (7.4 per game), fourth in steals (2.3 per game) sixth in blocks (0.7 per game) and 10th in scoring (9.9 per game). She averages 32.8 minutes per game, fifth amongst conference players.
Thompson and the Bears are off until Dec. 18 when they face Howard in Washington, D.C.
