SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Ije Ajemba has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week for games played Jan. 9-15, the conference announced Tuesday. Ajemba led the Spartans in scoring in both contests last week and pulled down 33 total rebounds. This is the second weekly award of the year for Ajemba.

Ajemba averaged a double-double last week as UNCG picked up two conference wins over Wofford and Furman, evening its record to 2-2 in SoCon play. Ajemba, who leads the SoCon with 10 double-doubles this season, also broke the UNCG program record for most double-doubles in a season in the win over Furman.

Against Wofford, Ajemba scored 17 points and brought down a program-record 21 rebounds, giving her the top two rebound totals in a single game in the conference this season. The 21 boards are also tied for 14th in Division I this year. Ajemba also recorded a season-best three steals in the contest.

In the double-overtime win over Furman, the Lanham, Maryland, native continued to be a force on the glass as she pulled down 12 rebounds and scored 15 points, propelling the Spartans to their second conference win of the season. Thirteen of Ajemba’s 15 points came in the fourth quarter and overtime periods and Ajemba accounted for eight of UNCG’s 12 total points in the two overtimes. The 6-3 center shot 62 percent from the floor and 71 percent from the charity stripe in the victory.

Ajemba has recorded double-doubles in six of the Spartans’ last seven games and has posted double-digit rebounds in nine consecutive contests. Ajemba currently ranks ninth in the NCAA with 12.3 rebounds per game and first in the SoCon in rebounds, offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds.
