Furman’s Chen named Women’s Golfer of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman junior Alice Chen has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from March 29 to April 4. The selection is made by the league office.

Chen, ranked 65th nationally, tied for second out of 94 competitors at the Clemson Invitational from Friday to Sunday, putting together a 7-under-par 209 against a field that included 25 ranked individuals other than herself.

The 2015 SoCon Freshman of the Year and 2016 Co-Player of the Year opened the tournament with a 4-under 68 to hold the lead after day one. Chen followed that up with a 3-under 69 Saturday to slip to second and closed her tournament with an even-par 72 Sunday to finish two shots out of first place.

The Princeton, New Jersey, native helped the eighth-ranked Paladins to a second-place finish in the stacked 17-team field, which included 11 teams ranked in the top 50. No. 6 Florida State won the tournament by two strokes and No. 5 Florida finished a stroke back of Furman.

The weekly award is the second of Chen’s career.

Furman wraps up regular-season action Monday and Tuesday at the Brickyard Collegiate, hosted by SoCon foe Mercer at the Brickyard at Riverside in Macon, Georgia. ETSU, UNCG, Samford and Chattanooga are scheduled to join the Paladins and Bears in the field.
