Women's basketball player of the week announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Ije Ajemba has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week for games played Dec. 5-11, the conference announced Tuesday.

Ajemba started the week with her conference-leading third double-double of the season at No. 14 Duke on Dec. 7. Ajemba shot 50 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the charity stripe en route to a 13-point effort against the Blue Devils The senior also collected a game-high 14 rebounds and chipped in one block and one steal in the loss.

On Dec. 11 against Murray State, the Lanham, Maryland, native nearly recorded her second consecutive double-double but finished one rebound shy. Ajemba finished 54 percent from the floor and recorded two steals to go along with her 13 points, giving Ajemba her fifth double-digit scoring game of the season.

The 6-3 forward finished the week averaging 13.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game and shot 52.4 percent from the floor in the Spartans’ two games. Ajemba leads the conference with an average of 10.8 rebounds per game and 108 total boards this season and also leads the SoCon in both offensive and defensive rebounds. Ajemba currently holds two of the three highest rebound totals in a single game in the conference after pulling down 15 boards at Radford and against Southern Wesleyan. The senior also ranks in the top 20 in Division I in rebounds and rebounds per game.
