SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU junior guard Tianna Tarter has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Dec. 20 through Jan. 2, the conference announced Tuesday.
Tarter averaged 23.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 3.0 steals in the Bucs’ pair of wins over Coppin State and Old Dominion. The Johnson City, Tenn., native recorded game-highs in scoring and assists in both games, while shooting 17-for-29 (.586) from the field to aid ETSU in posting back-to-back 70-point performances over the holidays.
In the Bucs’ 70-68 win over Coppin State on Dec. 20, Tarter scored 23 points, connecting on 10-of-19 (.526) field goal attempts to notch her 20th career 20-point game. She also led all players with five assists and four steals.
Against Old Dominion on Dec. 28, Tarter recorded her second straight 20-point performance, concluding her final 2016 contest with 24 points after hitting 7-of-10 (.700) field goal attempts and 10-of-14 free throw attempts in the Bucs’ 70-60 win over the Lady Monarchs. Once again, the junior guard recorded a game-high seven assists and tied a game-high with two steals.
Tarter is currently the only scorer in the SoCon to average at least 20 points per contest (20.5 ppg), and also ranks second in steals (2.5 spg), third in assists (4.7 apg) and fifth in field goal percentage (.476).
ETSU (8-7) will open conference play at Mercer (11-3) on Thursday, Jan. 5 with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m. and will broadcast on ESPN3.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Kahlia Lawrence (Mercer), Nadine Soliman (UNCG), Hannah Nichols (Samford), Queen Alford (Chattanooga), Sherae Bonner (Western Carolina) and Chloe Wanink (Wofford).
