HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Haylee Harford (+4) fired a second-round 72 Saturday and is tied for 19th to lead the 27th-ranked Furman women’s golf team heading into the final day of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,243-yard Long Cove Club.
Harford, a native of Leavittsburg, Ohio, parred the back nine then birdied No. 2 and No. 5 to conclude the round 1-over par and seven strokes back of leaders Alexandra Farnsworth (-3) of Vanderbilt and Lauren Coughlin (-3) of Virginia, who each shot an opening-round 67 and added a 72 on Saturday.
Junior Taylor Totland (+9) is tied for 53rd after carding a 75 with birdies on No. 6 and No. 12 on Saturday, while senior Valentina Romero (+10) also scored a 75 after carding back-to-back birdies on No. 7 and No. 8. She is tied for 63rd entering Sunday’s final round. Sophomores Alice Chen (+16) and Reona Hirai (+16) are tied for 85th after two rounds of play.
No. 4 Alabama (+8) holds a three stroke lead over 32nd-ranked Virginia (+11) heading in to the final round. The Paladins (+37) are in 16th place.
The final round of the 54-hole tournament, which features seven teams ranked in the top 25 in the latest Golfstat poll, including each of the country’s top five programs, begins Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Eleven of the 17 teams competing at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate qualified for the 2015 NCAA Championships, and eight schools in the field have won a tournament this season.
