SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer will take on Georgia Tech on Thursday in the first round of the 2016 Women’s National Invitation Tournament, it was announced Monday. The contest will be played in Atlanta, Ga., at McCamish Pavilion. A tipoff time is yet to be announced.
The Bears, who went 24-8, claimed a share of the SoCon regular-season title and eventually fell in the league’s tournament championship to NCAA-bound Chattanooga. Their 24 wins set a program record for most victories in a season at the Division I level.
The Yellow Jackets closed the season with a 19-12 record and fell to Louisville in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.
Mercer’s first and most recent appearance in the WNIT was in 1975.
The winner of the Georgia Tech-Mercer matchup will advance to face either Alabama or Tulane in the tournament’s second round.
