SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer freshman Payton Schanen has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Feb. 6-23. The selection is made by the league office.
Schanen was the wire-to-wire leader at the FGCU Eagle Invitational from Feb. 12-14, turning in a tournament-record 4-under par 212 for a dominant eight-stroke win. The rookie from Alpharetta, Ga., opened with a 2-under 70 before closing out the tournament with back-to-back 71s to run away from the 83-player field.
Schanen’s win helped Mercer to the team title, as well, as the Bears shot 894 over three rounds for a nine-stroke win over runner-up Toledo and the rest of the 15-team field. The win was Mercer’s first since 2013.
Mercer returns to action at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C., from Sunday to Tuesday.
Also nominated: Alice Chen (Furman), Anna Buchanan (Samford), Cris Perez (Chattanooga), Kim Mitchell (Western Carolina) and Nicole Chin (Wofford).
