SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Lucy Mason has been named the Innovative Office Solutions Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Dec. 22-Jan. 4, the league office announced Tuesday. She averaged 25.5 points per game on 51.4 percent shooting in two Spartans wins over the holiday break.
The senior guard became the Spartans’ all-time leading scorer in a 71-51 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 28, tallying 29 points on 11-of-24 shooting to eclipse Angie Polk-Jones’ 26-year-old mark of 1,585 career points. She added seven rebounds and an assist in the victory. Mason then propelled the Spartans to a convincing 103-56 triumph over North Carolina Central on Sunday, posting 22 points and shooting 7-of-11 from the field. She also contributed six rebounds, six assists and two steals in the winning effort.
The Stone Mountain, Ga., product is currently tops in the SoCon and fourth in the country with an average of 24.2 points per game. She ranks in the top five in the league in five other statistical categories: assists, free-throw percentage, steals, 3-point field-goal percentage and 3-point field goals made.
SoCon play kicks off for all eight teams on Thursday. Mason and the Spartans will host Mercer at 7 p.m. in their conference opener.
