SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Whitney Bunn has been named the Innovative Office Solutions Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 19-25, the league office announced Tuesday. The junior guard averaged 29.0 points per game in a pair of conference road wins for the Paladins.
Bunn began the week with a career-high 33 points on 12-of-20 shooting in an 83-76 overtime triumph at Western Carolina on Thursday. She added five rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Catamounts, and she scored nine of her points during a 12-0 Furman run to send the contest to an extra session. On Sunday, Bunn put forth a 25-point effort and again shot .600 from the field (9-of-15) as the Paladins downed UNCG in Greensboro, N.C., 75-59. She also contributed seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the victory.
The Bunn, N.C., native currently ranks fourth in the SoCon in points per game (14.9) and second in assists per game (5.2). She is the only player in the conference to rank in the top five in both of those categories. In addition, Bunn’s performance against the Spartans on Sunday put her at 999 points and 400 assists for her career.
The Paladins (11-9, 4-1 SoCon) will be back in action when they host Samford (12-8, 4-1 SoCon) on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
