UNCG?s Mason named player of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Lucy Mason has earned Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week honors for all games held Nov. 17-23. The senior guard tallied 26 points against Francis Marion before breaking the school’s single-game record with 42 points in an 82-72 win over High Point on Saturday.

Mason’s 42-point effort, which came on 14-of-26 shooting, shattered her previous career high of 27 points and surpassed Anna Parker’s mark of 38 points against Wake Forest in 1979 for the Spartans’ single-game record. The Stone Mountain, Ga., native was a combined 8-of-14 from beyond the arc and 16-of-19 from the free-throw line in both games. She logged all 40 minutes in both contests this past week.

Her average of 27.0 points per game on the season ranks third nationally and first in the SoCon.

The Spartans (2-2) will return to action when they travel to Gardner-Webb on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Other nominees: Shamauria Bridges (ETSU), Holli Wilkins (Furman), Kahlia Lawrence (Mercer) and Jasmine Joyner (Chattanooga).
