UNCG third at Forest Oaks Fall Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team posted its lowest round of the season and sits in third place after one round of the UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic on Friday afternoon at the Forest Oaks Country Club on a rain-soaked afternoon.
The three-day, 54-hole event is slated for round two Saturday, weather permitting, with a 10 a.m. shotgun start with live scoring available via www.golfstatresults.com.
The Spartans posted a 21-over-par 301 team score, sitting in third place behind Winthrop (16-over 296) and Xavier (17-over 297). The rain-soaked conditions forced the Forest Oaks course to play at a par-70, 5,801 yards, down from its original setup at par-72. The 301 score by the Spartans is their lowest this season and ties their lowest score from last year set in the final round of the Southern Conference Championship.
Senior Jessica Madsen led the Spartans in round one by shooting a career-low 3-over-par 73. Madsen is tied for fifth overall, four shots out of the lead held by Winthrop’s Ashley Sloup at 1-under-par 69.
Sophomore transfer Lexi Kershaw was the Spartans’ second finisher in a tie for eighth place overall. Kershaw tallied a 5-over-par 75, her second-lowest round of the year. Junior Emily Kurey is tied for 13th place overall after posting a 6-over-par 76 in round one. Kurey’s score was the lowest of her career, trimming one shot off her previous low of 77 set at the Mountain View Collegiate last season.
Junior Kristin Powers is tied for 21st overall after posting a 7-over-par 77 in round one. Freshman Natalia Asensio rounded out the lineup with a 10-over-par 80 in her first career round at Forest Oaks. Junior Maddi MacClurg played as an individual, posting a 12-over-par 82 to finish in a tie for 40th place overall.
Joining the Spartans for the event are Towson, James Madison, Mercer, Boston University, The Citadel, Winthrop, Presbyterian and Xavier.
Mercer seventh at Forest Oaks Fall Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Mercer University freshman Terese Romeo shot a career-best 71 to lead the Bears' women's golf team in the rain-soaked opening round at UNCG’s Forest Oaks Fall Classic on Friday morning.
Romeo, who is playing as an individual this tournament, had the best round of her young career. The Tampa, Fla., native carded a 2-under 34 on the back nine to carry her into a tie for second place and just two strokes out of the lead.
Mercer heads into Saturday's second round in seventh place with a score of 315 in the opening 18 holes of golf. The Bears are six strokes out of fifth place in an event that is led by Winthrop (296) and Xavier (297).
Payton Schanen is on pace for her first career top-10 finish and the third straight top-20 effort after carding three birdies on her way to eighth place on opening day with a 5-over 75.
Mary Augusta Janiga finished three strokes behind in a tie for 25th place. She heads into Saturday's second round, needing to make up three strokes to earn her third consecutive top-10 finish.
The Bears' six players in action combined for seven birdies on the day, including a team-leading three from Schanen and two from Romeo.
Mercer continues play Saturday with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
The Citadel ninth at Forest Oaks Fall Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Citadel women’s golf team is currently in ninth place at the Forest Oaks Fall Classic after one round of rain-soaked play.
Eraina Manor is currently tied for 25th after playing 18 holes on Friday. The senior shot a 78 on the par-70 Forest Oaks Country Club. Renata Sucha carded an 80 in round one, tying her for 31st.
Marina Grimal recorded an 83 and Laura Simpson shot a 99 to round out the rest of the Bulldog golfers.
The Bulldogs are set for a 10 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday, but with rain still in the forecast, that time is subject to change.
