Janiga leads, Mercer second at Fighting Camel Fall Classic
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Mercer University freshman Mary Augusta Janiga continued her run at the front of the Fighting Camel Fall Classic field, helping the women's golf team move up three spots on the leaderboard and into second place after 36 holes of golf.
Mercer carded a 22-over-par 310 in the second round to move past Georgia Southern, Northern Illinois and Old Dominion on its way to second place with a two-day tally of 623. The host team, Campbell, leads the field with 607 strokes through the first two rounds.
Janiga continued her run at the top of the leaderboard, using back-to-back birdies on No. 16 and No. 17 to finish with a 1-over 73 on Monday. She leads the field with nine birdies, including a tournament-best three on par-3 holes.
The Bears ranked fourth among the field with 16 birdies, behind Janiga's tournament-best nine birdies. Schanen has four birdies, while Hannah Mae Deems has added two. Meredith Owen, playing as an individual, has also notched three birdies for Mercer.
Payton Schanen climbed 13 spots into 22nd place with her second-round tally of 77. She heads into the final day of action just one stroke away from her fourth straight top-20 performance.
The Bears close out the 2015 Fighting Camel Fall Classic on Tuesday with the first tee time set for 9 a.m.
Western Carolina tied for sixth at Fighting Camel Fall Classic
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Senior Mariah Hopkins jumped eight spots in the individual standings on Monday, surging into a tie with seven others, including classmate Kim Mitchell, for 10th place after two rounds of competition at the 2015 Fighting Camel Fall Classic. Western Carolina’s two seniors paced the Catamounts into a tie for sixth overall, just a stroke outside the team top five at the par-72, 6,050-yard Orange & Black Course at the Keith Hills Country Club.
Hopkins carded five bogeys in the second round, with four coming on the front nine. After making the turn to the back, the Greensboro, N.C., native scored six consecutive pars before tallying her lone birdie of the day on the par-5 18th to shoot 4-over 76 for a two-day total of 154.
Mitchell was consistent on Monday, recording four bogeys and five pars on both the front and back nine to shoot 8-over 80. The Woodbridge, Va., product slipped seven spots in the standings into the tie for 10th overall at 154, just four strokes outside the top five.
Freshman Maddi Caldwell trimmed three strokes off of her second-round score to shoot 79 on Monday, advancing 10 spots as WCU’s biggest mover in the second round. She is tied for 43rd overall with nine others that includes junior teammate Bethany Galloway. The two Catamounts both have 36-hole scores of 161.
Rounding out WCU’s scoring five is freshman Natalia Villavicencio, who is tied for 61st overall at 165, shooting 82 on Monday after an 83 on Sunday.
Competing unattached as an individual, junior Ashley Thompson sits in a four-way tie for 67th overall with a two-day score of 168. Thompson tallied a birdie on the par-3 14th.
Paired with golfers from Northern Illinois and Stetson, WCU’s scoring five hits the course between the seventh and 10th holes with a 9 a.m. shotgun start with individual Ashley Thompson beginning on No. 17.
Wofford third at Terrier Intercollegiate
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Maegan Higgins sank three birdies to card a 2-over-par 74 and lead the Wofford women’s golf team on day one of the Terrier Intercollegiate. The tournament teed off Monday morning from The Country Club of Spartanburg.
Both Higgins and Wofford sit in third place in the 11-team, 58-player field. Higgins drained her first birdie on the par-4, 346-yard second and added two more on the back nine at the par-4 13th and par-5 15th. The senior from Piedmont, S.C., is two shots back of Gardner-Webb’s Julia Henderson, who posted the only even-par round of the day.
Kennesaw State leads the field with a team round of 10-over-par 298. The Owls are four shots ahead of Gardner-Webb (+14) and 12 shots ahead of a three-way tie for third between Wofford (+22), Winthrop and Appalachian State.
Nicole Chin is also inside the top 10 on the leaderboard. She had three bogeys on the front for a 3-over 38 but was able to find two birdies on the back for a 1-over 38. The sophomore product of Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, S.C., is 4-over-par in a three-way tie for eighth.
Senior Emiley Pagrabs (+7), junior Katy Funk (+9) and sophomore Lela Oakley (+10) round out the Terriers in the team competition. Funk was able to recover from a 7-over 42 on the front to post a 2-over 39 with two birdies on the back. Junior Allyson Markiewicz (+10) and freshmen Rebeca Maruri (+11) and Page Morehead (+11) are competing as individuals.
The final round of the fifth annual Terrier Intercollegiate tees off in a shotgun format on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Live scoring will be provided by BirdieFire.
The Citadel 11th at Terrier Intercollegiate
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel women’s golf team is currently in 11th place after one round of competition at the Terrier Intercollegiate.
Marina Grimal and Cameron Little are both tied for 33rd after 18 holes at The Country Club of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Renata Sucha is currently tied for 50th after carding an 88 on the day. Laura Simpson shot a 105 to put her in 57th overall.
The tournament resumes Tuesday with round two beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
Chattanooga tied for ninth at Cardinal Cup
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team is tied for ninth with Columbia after 36 holes at the Cardinal Cup. The Mocs shot 303 in the first round before coming back with a 298 in the afternoon. The 601 total is just four shots out of fifth-place, where Wisconsin stands at 597.
Isabella Loza had the team’s low round of the day in the afternoon. She opened with a 78 and closed with a 1-under par 71. Her 5-over 149 is tied for 20th overall.
Loza is one clear of Emily McLennan, who shot 76-74 for a 150. Megan Woods (75-76) is another shot behind at 151. Monica San Juan posted 153 after the best 18 of the morning with a 74. Cris Perez tallied 158.
Host Louisville leads by one. The Cardinals shot 584, just ahead of Florida State’s 585. Notre Dame is third at 590, followed closely by Illinois at 591.
Wisconsin’s Brooke Ferrell is the individual leader at -4 turning in 66 and 74. Notre Dame’s Isabella DiLisio is second at -2 with a trio of golfers tied for third at -1.
The final round is a 9:15 a.m. shotgun start. The ladies are paired with Columbia and Richmond on holes 11-14.
