Chattanooga tied for third at Pinehurst Challenge
PINEHURST, N.C. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team opened the Pinehurst Challenge with a 1-under-par 287 and finished the 36-hole day with a level-par 288. That puts the Mocs tied for third with Elon at 575 (-1) on Pinehurst No. 1.
It also extends the squad’s par-or-better streak to a school-record five consecutive rounds. It was powered by 15 birdies on the Mocs’ finishing holes (1-6) from a shotgun start.
Cris Perez and Monica San Juan led the way with 1-under 143s. The duo is tied for 14th. Megan Woods and Emily McLennan are two behind them in 24th at +1. Perez, San Juan and Woods all turned in the best 36-hole totals of their young careers.
Isabella Loza contributed a 73 to the first-round tally of 287. Her 76 in round two was the drop score as she stands at 149.
East Carolina is in the lead at 6-under. It owns a three-shot advantage over Iowa in second and five clear of the Mocs and Phoenix in third. William & Mary’s Alessandra Liu and College of Charleston’s Louise Olsson are tied for the individual lead at -8.
The final round is an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Chattanooga is paired with ECU, Iowa and Elon opening on holes 1-3.
ETSU ninth at Pinehurst Challenge
PINEHURST, N.C. – The ETSU women’s played 36 holes of golf and finished in ninth place out of 19 teams Monday at the Pinehurst Challenge. Vivienne Chin carded the lowest overall score for ETSU at 3-under-par.
Hee Ying Loy led the team in the first 18 holes as she finished even on the front and back nine. Loy finished Monday with five total birdies on five different holes. Chin finished 1-over on the first round as she parred every hole on the back nine holes. In the second round, however, she posted her personal-best score this season with a 68. Chin is currently tied for eighth place individually, while Loy is tied for 21st.
Linda Dobele and Rachel Pollock each improved their scores from the first to second round. Dobele ended her second round at the Pinehurst Challenge by posting a +2. Pollock improve by shooting a +3 in the second round.
ETSU shot a +9 as a team the first day and is just eight strokes out of fifth place.
The Bucs will tee off on holes 8-11 at 8:30 a.m.
Western Carolina 15th at Pinehurst Challenge
PINEHURST, N.C. – Junior Bethany Galloway paced the Western Carolina women’s golf team on Monday, firing an even-par 144 over the opening 36 holes to enter the final round amidst a tie for 21st overall at the Pinehurst Challenge, hosted by the College of Charleston at the par-72, 5,949-yard Pinehurst No. 1.
Galloway shot a career-low round of 1-under 71 over the opening 18 holes before finishing the day with a 1-over 73 for the even-par score. Tied for 12th after the first 18 holes, WCU enters Tuesday’s final round in 15th overall, just seven strokes outside the top 10.
Paired with golfers from Morehead State (12th-t), Nebraska (14th) and High Point (16th), WCU’s scoring five opens the final round with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. between the 11th and 14th holes.
Catamount senior Kim Mitchell posted rounds of even-par 72 and 3-over 75 to sit tied for 40th with a 36-hole score of 147.
True freshman Maddi Caldwell matched her career-best round with a 2-over 74 in the second round to finish Monday’s two rounds tied for 66th overall at 151. Caldwell shot 5-over 77 with seven bogeys and two birdies in the first round, following it with three birdies in the second in matching her low round.
Rounding out WCU’s scoring five are senior Mariah Hopkins in a tie for 86th overall at 156 (77-79) and freshman Natalia Villavicencio in 97th after shooting 160 (84-76).
UNCG 17th at Pinehurst Challenge
PINEHURST, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team wrapped up the first day of the Pinehurst Challenge hosted by the College of Charleston at Pinehurst No. 1 on Monday in 17th place.
The third and final round will begin Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The Spartans will tee off from holes Nos. 15-17. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com on the par-72, 5,949-yard course.
The Spartans posted a 41-over-par 617 team score after notching rounds of 305 and 312 Monday. UNCG’s first-round score of 305 marked its second-lowest round of the season, trailing only a 301 set last week at the UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic.
Freshman Natalia Asensio led the Spartans on day one as she sits in a tie for 71st place overall. Asensio carded an 8-over-par 152 as she notched rounds of 2-over 74 and 6-over 78.
Junior Kristin Powers is also tied for 71st place overall at an 8-over 152. Powers opened with the Spartans’ lowest round of the day with a 1-over 73 before notching a 7-over 79 in round two.
Sophomore transfer Lexi Kershaw is tied for 83rd place overall at an 11-over 155. Kershaw tallied rounds of 78 and 77 in her solid afternoon. Senior Jessica Madsen posted a 15-over 159 (81-78), while junior Emily Kurey rounded out the lineup with a 163 (80-83).
